2013 was Simpson's final year of a contract so I assume he signed for two (2014/2015).
I have a memory of Dawson being on the radio late last year after he hurt his knee, saying he and the club were working on a two year contract.
He had been at a crossroads that year but came in for those six (?) games, played every game as though it was his last, did a really good job, and earned himself another contract.
I hadn't heard anything else after that.

WAtch the Grundy fans come out of the woodwork now….
Rearview mirror work ahead….

Go Catters

I have no real issue with the Grundy non selection , how could I , we picked Thurlow instead of. That was the 2012 draft. We did that on the back of Hmac recruitment.

What I do have a problem with is our non selection of another ruck in 2013, whether he is a journyman or kid when we had seem Hmac do zip for 12 months , when Vardy had shown himself to be likely to be used forward (we got rid of Pods based on that) , when Simpson has NEVER played a full season of footy , and we were left with a guy playing football for the first time in years as our ruck.

I have not a huge issue with most of our selections , I can see that most show potential but why we kept Teddy when he had shown he was only ever going to be fringe player , why we draft Bates at height , ok bad luck he hasn't even played but still .. all in preference to drafting a player who could help out if we got into trouble. I just don't get it. We have played VFL guys there in the 2's all year , its not as if he would disrupted the setup.

This is what Scott said after the knee injury last season

"I'd just like to reinforce to Dawson in particular that our club, especially in recent times, has a very good record of looking after those players who do the right thing and live the right values, and have some bad luck.
"So we'll certainly stand by Dawson."

So, if the docs clear him, we won't be discarding him.

Witness also, of course, Menzel and (hopefully) Cowan.

Correct. Whether he decides it's all not worth it is another matter entirely.

Yep should have picked a ruck last year, preferably on the rookie list. It's the perfect place for them instead of picking up potential fringe players.

We pretty much have to get someone who is ready made this year.

I don't know how he thinks, he may deciode enough's enough.
The docs may tell him so, as well.
We'll know when and if he does the 12 week rehab successfully, he would be very unlikely to walk away after that, I would have thought.

Some comments from his last rehab:

"I wondered if my time was up, definitely,'' he reflected.

"It was the lowest point of my career.

"I remember laying there and having to do a fair bit of soul searching, just to get the negative energy and all the bad thoughts out of my head.

Hope this explains why Simpson looked better last year (before he went down) than this year - when I thought he would make progress and be a decent player for us.

Just hope all goes well - he has a big pre-season and comes back fit and well. Really an important player for us as we have no back up and HMac - and is not a spring chicken or exactly injury free.

IMO if we are to make progress next season we need someone like Simpson to come good and be a really competitive first ruckman.

For all those that said Hmac was a bad selection or would never play for GFC - well he is vital to us now and has been shown to have been a sensible pick up - as has Rivers.

"Scott said ruckman Dawson Simpson would be unavailable this week after suffering back spasms..."

*cough*

Played us for fools again.
that could have just been the symptoms- and he then needed to have his back assessed properly. Maybe it was just the initial diagnosis- but the underlying cause was more sinister than at first thought.

What is is back problem, exactly? Does anyone know? And, do you think he is likely to just give it all away??
I had a feeling that there might have been more to this year's performance compared to what Big Dawson produced last year. He was nowhere near it for most of 2014.

sorry, JD. I sounded like an echo with my post above- hadn't read yours but, yes, I agree- I hope it is what caused him to drop his performance this year. Having said that, though, his tap work WAS very very good most of the time.

I wish I shared your lack of cynicism TC. They should have said it was still being assessed if that was the case, particularly given his history.

Fair enough. I guess they do like to play their cards close to their chest. They might've even been cautious not to have Simpson stressing about it- ie. tried to allay his fears. Maybe I'm just a person who doesn't like to think the worst of the club until absolute proof smacks me between the eyes ;)

That's exactly what they are going to do.
Last years draft was thin for talls beyond the first 2 or 3.
Wells knew this year however is a deep draft for talls and potentially ruckman.
People need to stop presuming everything is done on a year by year basis, have no doubt wells is planning the 2016 and 2017 drafts as we speak.
