Rockliff 'the right man to lead' the Lions, says Zorko

TOM Rockliff is a confrontational leader, but the right man to captain the Brisbane Lions next season, according to the club's best and fairest winner Dayne Zorko.

Rockliff's place at the Lions – as both a player and captain – has been at the centre of much speculation in recent weeks, but vice captain Zorko was emphatic in his support.

While the rest of the club begins a transformation that will include a new coach, football manager and likely board members, Zorko says the captaincy shouldn't change hands.

Player Reviews: Part 3

Dayne Zorko’s terrific season was rewarded with the Merrett-Murray Medal at the Lions’ Club Champion awards. It is the second time Zorko has won the Club's Fairest and Best award, after being one of four Merrett-Murray medallists in 2015. Zorko played 20 games in 2016 and celebrated his 100th match in Round 22. He averaged 23.6 disposals this season, including a season high 33 touches against Sydney. He kicked four goals in the Lions’ big loss to Collingwood in Round 8, and played one of the best halves seen by a Brisbane Lions player in recent seasons against Carlton in Round 21. Zorko was the architect of the Lions’ four-point win with a superb individual display. He finished with 27 touches, three goals, 12 inside 50s, five scoring assists and 12 contested possessions.

Coach’s notes:

Dayne Zorko was obviously our best and fairest winner. He was 1st in a lot of categories for the footy club, he had 100 inside 50’s, which is number one for the club, he was the number one tackler with 128, 2nd in disposals at 471, equal leading goal kicker with 23, leading score assist player with 30, he played mainly through the wing and had spurts on ball in the middle. He played 20 games for the season, an outstanding year by Dayne Zorko.

THE GUN

DAYNE Zorko continues to be the most underrated star in the AFL.

Whether it’s because he plays outside of Victoria on a bad team, his size or his flexibility position-wise, Zorko just doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.

Zorko didn’t even make the All-Australian 40-man squad despite a season graded as ‘elite’ by Champion Data, which stated that he “does not have a weakness in his game”. That seems like a good thing.

He doesn’t get an enormous number of disposals — averaging 23.6 per game in 2016 — but he uses them tremendously efficiently, while he also has excellent scoreboard impact while providing brilliant pressure going the other way as well.

You’d love to have him on your team. You just don’t realise it.

Five talking points: Brisbane Lions v Fremantle
1. The Z-factor
Nineteen disposals, eight clearances, five tackles and a goal would be considered a solid day's work for the average AFL player. But for Dayne Zorko, that's just half a game's effort. Tucked away in Brisbane, Zorko doesn't get the accolades he deserves, but the two-time Lions best-and-fairest winner is a dominant force. Shorter than most at 175cm, Zorko's pace and power out of stoppages sets him apart, and he takes his opportunities around goal. He finished the match with 30 touches, 10 clearances and two goals in yet another best-on-ground performance.

Talking Footy and On the Couch both (and probably Footy classified later) riding the Zorko would be a superstar if he played in Victoria narrative. He's a star anywhere. It will be a travesty if he doesn't at least make the All Australian shortlist this year.
Because apparently you have to play for a Victorian side for AFL journalists to notice you.

Seriously, comments such as these suggests that said AFL journalists don't even watch games outside of Victoria.

Sadly, I think that actually is the case. Brian Taylor was on instead of Carey on Talking Footy and as Watson was pumping him up he asked something like, "he's going well is he?" I'd be willing to bet he hasn't seen one minute of a Brisbane game all year.

Beams praises Zorko

Brisbane Lions Captain Dayne Beams said Dayne Zorko set the Gabba alight on Saturday evening in the Lions’ 57-point victory over Fremantle.

Zorko finished the match with 30 touches, 10 clearances and two goals in a best-on-ground performance for the back-to-back Merrett-Murray Medallist.

“He’s a natural footballer with flair,” Beams told SEN yesterday. “He’s always up and about, he’s the one that really gets our group going. “When he’s up and going, he’s really important for us and against Fremantle he set us alight.”
