Who's met him? Who knows him?
What are the anecdotes and general opinions on him?
Not great, right? Why?

No surprise at all. Waugh / Tubby - that would have been surprising.

Arrogant pr1ck...IMO. Still remember many years back was drinking with a number of my mates after a game of footy at the Redback in North Melbourne. Jones was there with a number of other VIC and AU players. At one point, he finished his beer and turned to a mate of mine and just gave him his empty glass and walked off. 10 minutes later, my mate finished his beer, walked up to Jones in amongst all of the cricketers, handed him his empty and walked off.

Well known to be a first class w***er. Reason why Chris Rogers is said to have "Dean Jones Syndrome".

When i was a kid i asked him for an autograph at a Shield match and he told me to piss off

Has a really bad rep throughout the grass roots level of cricket in Victoria, has a rep for being a pretty average bloke.

His brother is no better and has been trading off Dean's name for years. His brother was also primarily responsible for the financial implosion of the Hawthorn/Monash University Premier Cricket club.

this.

Met him at that Ashes reunion thing in town during the 90's, brief chat (mostly my father since, I was mid teens and below his superior status, plus male) but definitely came off as a bit full of himself in what was about 5 minutes of convo.

When i was a kid i asked him for an autograph at a Shield match and he told me to piss off

I got a death glare, least you got verballed at. :p

I see I wasn't the only he did that to.

I waited until between overs while he was sitting in the pavilion because I didn't want to interrupt him during play (admittedly he was padded up) and he said "I'm too busy watching the game" and waved me away. Given I had waited until play had stopped I thought that was a tad harsh on an 11 year old.

I cant stand those little shits that think international cricketers owe them an autograph.

If they were really serious about it they'd attend a few shield matches where they can sit right up close with the players and get one.

I agree.

Jones is a certified w***er, though.

I was an autograph fiend when I was a kid (8-12 or so), used to pester my dad to take me down to Sydney for the Shield matches whenever a team I hadn't seen was playing NSW (especially when the internationals were playing).

I was pretty experienced and very careful about when to ask the players. Jones was the only player who ever turned me down, and he was pretty damn rude about it.

Shane Warne turned me down at the Gabba in 96/97, I was a kid. Warnie was smoking, watching the test V the Windies in the players area. Said he was too busy.

Later on, a young Punter Ponting signed my Steve Waugh World Cup diary.

I went to a cricket camp at the end of 92 at Scotch College & when I was bowling I was mixing it up a bit. A player I was to young to remember, Alan Conolly I think his name was, saw me bowl a leggie that hit the spot & pointed to Warnie who was walking around looking lost & told me to see him. He was teriffic, I spent close to 1/2 an hour 1 on 1 with a bloke who went on to be 1 of the greatest players of all time. He was telling me about having paitence & even when you're having a bad day things can turn around quickly & being a 14 y.o I mentioned how he was getting carted in Sri Lanka in a Test but came back to get the last 3-4 wickets to win the match. He was a bit taken back when I said it but then said it was a great example of what he was talking about. It was a couple of weeks before the Boxing Day Test where he got 7 for against the Windies & after that a star was well & truly born. I suppose people can change when that happens but the time I met Warnie was 1 of the best memories of my life.

Another time I went & saw the Aussies train at the G before the Boxing Day Test in 2000 against the Windies. I was at a mates place in Richmond & as I was leaving the radio said they were about to start training so I thought why not. That day I saw Mark Waugh completely brush off 5-6 kids wanting an autograph because 'my hands are full'. He had a bat in 1 hand, helmet in the other!! He then got to the entrance of the net area & needed to ask how to get in when parents started having a go at him by calling him a w#*ker & d#*khead because he'd only been going there for 15 years & should know his way around by now. Felt a bit sorry for him as he'd never really made himself out to be a man of the people so I don't know why people would expect any different of him.

Ricky Ponting just stood at the top of the bowling mark with his arms crossed for the 1/2 hour or so I was there, didn't bat & didn't even move to pick up balls that were at his feet to give back to the net bowlers. There were none of the Aussie bolwers there, just club bowlers. Looked like he had a shocking attitude but no doubt he's come a long way in the last 10 years.

Finally, I saw Micheal Slater bat & he was all at sea. It was only 2-3 months before his clash with Dravid in India & after what I saw this day I wasn't surprised when it happened. He was clearly not in a good place. He nearly got struck on the helmet twice by club bowlers & he then did get hit on the helmet. The bowler who hit him followed through to about 5-6 metres of him, I think he was amazed with what he did. Slater then proceeded to pick the ball up & smack it full bore 5-6 inches past the bowlers leg & fair to say the bowler didn't know how to react. Just stood there for a bit then went to the top of his mark again. It was probably the only ball Slater struck well for the whole session.

All in all a pretty interesting training session!!

Cool stories.

I went to the same training session in 2000 before the boxing day tests and managed to make my way to the West Indies area and be right around them. The aussies had far more structure in their training and I remember seeing Ponting in the nets bat so well and thinking man he's good. Being a Windies fan I followed them and hung around as much as possible.

Got to meet Lara and have a brief chat and he was a nice laid back guy. He also didn't know how to get through a gate and asked me for a key or something (like as if I'd know..). I was following him around, as he was my fav cricketer, I said "I'll definitely find out for you" or something like that enthusiastically, and he's like "oh thanks man." He didn't do full training because of an injury or something, and you could definitely tell he liked to his own thing and didn't take it all too serious at that time. His performance related. Walsh was around chatting friendly with fans and so was Sarwan who was also friendly and he actually asked autograph hunters if they wanted his signature too. Sarwan batted like a gun too and made Wavell Hinds next to him look crap.

I managed to stay longer in their private training session before a guard kicked me out. I was there long enough to see them practice catching with a tennis racket and tennis ball, so no wonder they dropped so many.

And on that training day, Shane Warne was the only aussie I remember to pro actively come out and sign autographs.
He has a good reputation for that and being good to kids, so I'm surprised he turned you down at the Gabba.

I saw Warney absolutely lose his shit at a WACA ODI one year.

Basically we were in deep trouble against i think Sri Lanka, we were 6 or 7 down and Warney walked out to bat, and we all cheered him etc... then he got out real quick skying one.. as he stormed off the field a couple of the lads were like "good stuff warney just what we needed" and he LOST IT calls us a bunch of cs and fs and hit a powerade sign with his bat :)
