i read in the herald sun today that we are in the mix for him. although its unlikely we'll get him, what do you think of the idea of him joining geelong?

i think he'd be a great asset. he can play forward, midfield and defence. and he's hard at the ball - it certainly wuldn't hurt to have a few more players like that.

thoughts?

Depends what we'd give up to get him, and his salary.

From all reports, he's after a rather healthy salary, something we can give, but would be wasted on player of his calibre. You pay vast amounts of cash for star players, that deserve it. Solly is a quality player, but by no means is he a star, and is definitely no where near the suggested price tag of $400,000 a year.

I'd love Solly on a 275,000 dollar wage, along side Matty Scarlett and Jarad Rooke. We'd surely have the toughest and arguably the best defence in the league if we were to acquire his services.

However, Richmond are definitely the front runners, as I previously touched on with reportedly offering him a prestigious salary of $400,000 a year. My offer is a mere pittance against such an offer - however, a much more accurate assessement, in terms of his ability.

if he was paid $400,00 at geelong, how many players at the club would be being paid that or above a year? any ideas?

2 - Ben Graham and Solomon, both undeserving of such payment.

Riccardi and King would closely follow with $390,000 and 310,000 respectively.

Matty Scarlett will be getting a raise too, one would think.

if paying big bucks is what it thats to attract a big name, then...

and as you say, we've got the money. he'll only be 24 next january and he has leadership qualities.

Do you seriously think he's worth $400,000?

If so, can you please justify your opinion for me?

Solomon is a top player but not really specific to our needs. we have a heaps of HBF (not of Solomons class) in our squad and what we lack is another tall down back. Maybe Jacobs would be a wiser addition.

You can take Jacobs. What will you offer us in return? If we offered Jacobs, another player, and a pick, would you consider trading us your first round pick?

Solomon isn't worth $400,000. It's just those Richmond vultures. ;)

To be honest with you, Jacob's finals campaign really dampened my spirits in relation to his ability.

Prior to September, I was massive rap for Danny Jacobs - thought he would slot very nicely into our defence and make a nice acquisition; however, now I'm not in the least interested.

Obviously your trade depends somewhat on the quality of the extra player, and the draft pick you offer us, but right now, I'm looking forward to drafting Fergus Watts ;)

sorry, i didn't make myself clear...i dont really think he's worth $400,000 but it wouldnt be the first time a club has paid over the odds to get a player.

also, i think you'd be getting more than a backman or a midfielder. his hardness at the ball and possible leadership qualities could be worth their weight in gold at geelong.

Is Jacobs better than Croad? I dont know  Who will be the better player in the long run? Would Essendon trade him for pick 22.

Apart from a CHF we definately need a versitile tall. One that can play back or forward . Not as our sole target or to hold the oppositions best player but just some insurance. Bradshaw is this player at Brisbane. I would definately like one of these two next year.

Solomon is probably my favourite Essendon player and would be awesome if we were able to get him to come to Geelong. Solomon would add toughness, experience and versitility to the team, not to mention quality. The only concern is his asking price, although we have the room in our salary cap to spend that kind of money and we have to use it up somewhere.

you must have missed the first final then, when he was among our best players. sure he played poorly against port, but he had a lot of company that night.

and no, to answer someone else's question, we would not trade jacobs for pick 22.

btw, the wage you are prepared to pay solomon is probably what we are offering him. he's not going to pick geelong if you offer him the same amount we are offering him. if you want him, you're going to have to open the chequebook like richmond ;)

Solomon

Dean Solomon could be heading to Geelong according to 3AW. We've offered him $400k a year for 4 years apparently!

***News flash***

At this moment, it's being reported that Dean Solomon has decided to leave Essendon.

Richmond, however, has been reported as the favourites to land him. But we shall see what happens...

Solomon to snub Dons
By Mark Robinson
October 9, 2003

DEAN SOLOMON is set to quit Essendon today. In what will be stunning news, the 23-year-old hard man has failed to come to terms with the club over money.

In the end, the club and Solomon stumbled over a figure believed to be somewhere between $240,000 and $280,000.

Solomon, in London with his long-term girlfriend, last night spoke at length to his manager Michael Quinlan.

Today's expected announcement will end a three-month negotiation between club and player.

Solomon, despite massive offers from several clubs headed by the aggressive Tigers, did not up the ante from his original asking price.

The Bombers marginally increased their offer in recent weeks, the latest coming yesterday morning.

It's believed Solomon will reject that offer.

The unlikely scenario that Solomon would remain a Bomber depends on Essendon agreeing to the terms originally asked. It appears unlikely.

Richmond's director of football Greg Miller also was in communication with Solomon in London and yesterday said he was "optimistically confident" of securing him.

At least seven clubs have inquired about Solomon, placing him beside Nick Stevens, Brown and Jade Rawlings as one of the most sought-after, out-of-contract players in the competition.

It's understood Solomon had several in-depth conversations with Essendon teammates while on their footy trip in Mexico.

Although wanting him to stay at Windy Hill, they understood any decision he made.

Solomon played 97 games for the black and red after being taken at No. 20 in the 1997 national draft.

Solomon quits Windy Hill

Dean Solomon has quit Essendon after failing to agree to terms on a new contract with the Bombers.

"This is one of the hardest decisions of my life," Solomon said in a statement.

"I love the club, my teammates and everyone, including the sponsors and supporters, who have been there for me during my six years at Windy Hill.

"I appreciate the enormity of the decision I have just made. It definitely hasn't been a last-minute decision, it has been a long drawn out process and the culmination of a number of things.

"I am deeply saddened that the club couldn't come to an appropriate arrangement with my management earlier but I want to make it clear that at not stage have I been looking to leave and join another club."

That's a bit much! Personally, I don't think he's worth that much.

Why didn't we offer that money to Rawlings then?

I thought Richmond was going for him. I would prefer to get a marking forward, but I could deal with getting Solomon.

We didn't have to offer Rawlings that much because the competition wasn't. In this case Richmond have offered him $1,500,000 over 4 years so (if correct) we've gone $100k better. I don't think he's worth it either! We shouldn't get too excited though he'll probably find a distant cousin at some other club and decide to go therefor family reasons!

We pay Ben Graham far more. On that alone, he's worth every cent.

Solly is tougher than Chappy, imagine both of them in the same team.

I was thinking the same thing, and he can play down back as well which would give us versitility and toughness at both ends of the ground.

1.6 over 4 years .At least we know the club is serious about getting a big fish !
He is not worth that much but if we a willing to pay he would be a great pick up.
I think he would have to play on the forward line.
