Cats mount bid for Don

Friday, October 10
Geelong Advertiser - SCOTT MORTON with AAP

GEELONG has made a desperate bid to lure Dean Solomon to the Cattery next season after he yesterday officially quit the Bombers.

Geelong chief executive Brian Cook confirmed last night that the club had made an offer to Solomon's manager, Michael Quinlan, but refused to disclose details.

Cook said Solomon was one of three players the club had made formal offers to but declined to name the others.

``He's (Solomon) is one of three players we've made formal offers to,'' Cook said. ``He's a good player who is available but probably not a key position player.''

It is understood Geelong has offered Solomon a three-year deal, worth just under $1 million, well below a four-year, $1.5 offer from Richmond.

Solomon yesterday confirmed he had quit the Bombers. Richmond insisted it could accommodate both Solomon and Nathan Brown, but was unlikely to do so without cutting senior players, in addition to Ben Holland.

Solomon, in London on a post-season holiday, said his decision to quit the Bombers had been among the hardest of his life.

``I love the club, my teammates and everyone, including the sponsors and supporters, who have been there for me during my six years at Windy Hill,'' Solomon said.

``I appreciate the enormity of the decision I have just made.

``It definitely hasn't been a last-minute decision, it has been a long drawn-out process and the culmination of a number of things.

``I am deeply saddened that the club couldn't come to an appropriate arrangement with my management earlier but I want to make it clear that at no stage have I been looking to leave and join another club.''

Quinlan said they had not upped their contract demands since initially lodging them in August, despite the interest from Geelong and Richmond.

Essendon was not prepared to match the amounts offered by Richmond which would have made Solomon - who had never finished in the top half-dozen in a Bomber best-and-fairest - higher paid than recent best-and-fairest winners Mark and Jason Johnson and Scott Lucas.

Essendon chief executive Peter Jackson said he was disappointed with Solomon's exit, but felt Bomber fans would respect the club's stance.

``You have to pay players relative to those around them and the offer we put to Dean was in line with that philosophy,'' Jackson said.

``Our list has to dictate what we pay, not what other clubs are able to pay.

``We simply could not match the reported offer put to him by a rival club, that being $400,000 a year over four years.

``It would have been irresponsible had we done so and put impossible pressures on our total player payment (salary cap) position,'' Jackson said.

``I wasn't prepared to risk that.''

The Bombers had left the door open for Solomon to reverse his decision, while any deal was dependent on a satisfactory player or draft-pick trade being offered.

``There are still some things that need to happen before this situation becomes final,'' Jackson said.

He would be good, his toughness is just what we need to back up players like Chappy. I hope we don't lose site of the fact that we are after a key forward, and just because we couldn't get one doesn't mean we can't go after another.

Sure, if we get him that's great, but we have to allow for the key-forward we want somewhere along the line.

Merged threads, again.

Also making note of the new information in today's Geelong Addy, as aforementioned... Proposed terms are for three years at a total of somewhere between $900K and $1 million. No word about up-front money, though.

Umm interesting, very interesting

kinda like local clubs with a sign on fee? If we can't attract a gun KF this year we could afford to spend 450K this year for Solomon. After that he goes back to the 270-280 his manager suggested he wanted at Essesndon. That would be OK. A front ended contract when we are hopeless. It's a novel idea. If we did have spare money this year we could have front loaded say Kingy's contract so when we are good in a couple of years time we don't get into salary cap trouble.

I still won't be happy if we trade pick 7 for him. Pick 22 and what we get from the Street trade (Gilbee or pick 34)

Article in Sunday's Herald-Sun quotes Mark Thompson as saying that Geelong is firmly amongst the queue of clubs racing for Dean Solomon's services for next season.

Geelong still in race for Solomon

12oct03

GEELONG coach Mark Thompson has declared the race for Dean Solomon far from over as the Cats attempt to snatch the Essendon defender from Richmond's clutches.

Solomon last week severed his ties at Essendon, with Richmond the front-runner for his services after working on him for several months.

But Thompson, an Essendon premiership captain and former assistant coach, said he had been in regular contact with Solomon.

Thompson also turned up the heat on the Kangaroos, stating Geelong was far from finished in its bid to lure Hawk Jade Rawlings.

"I spoke to (Solomon) when he was initially talking about signing up and I spoke to him recently," he said.

"I think that there are a lot of clubs pretty keen to get his signature down on paper and we are one of those clubs.

"Sometimes players prefer to go to a certain club, but that's not always the way it works out.

"There are a lot of clubs in line for Dean's services. It is up to Essendon and the club they want to deal with as much as where Dean wants to go."

Richmond is believed to have offered Solomon $380,000 a year for four seasons, but Thompson said he hoped Geelong could get him for less.

With the Kangaroos and Hawthorn so far unable to come to agreement on the Rawlings deal, Thompson said it might drag out until the Friday 2pm trade deadline.

"I think it is very open. I don't think the Jade Rawlings one is very secure at North Melbourne," Thompson told 3AW.

"I have heard rumours and I am sure you have all heard the rumours as well. It is a long way from being solved."

Thompson also defended his one-year contract extension, saying the extended tenure would help lure key players and the two assistant coaches the club was seeking.

"In 12 months' time they might be saying what a very good deal Geelong footy club got. Who knows?" he said.

"Everybody is predicting the worst and I think we are going to go OK and it might be a good decision."

But he refused to echo president Frank Costa's recent prediction of a top-six finish.

"Right now we are placed to go further up the ladder. Off the field, Frank and the board have done a great job and I can't see why there would be any criticism," he said.

Geelong this week signed Mark Blake, son of best-and-fairest winner Rod, and have turned their attentions to another father-son candidate in Nathan Ablett.

"With Nathan, he is still deciding whether he wants to play footy at this stage," Thompson said.

"He is a shy boy, a very shy boy, but he is a very good footballer. We have got to do everything we can to see if Nathan will play.

"If it is not this year, it could be next year or the year after. We have got a little bit of work in front of us, but I don't think we should give up. We should do everything we possibly can to get Nathan to play."

Interesting comments from Thompson on the Jade Rawlings affair as well, which I think is a bit of a moot point.

2 of the more positive things Thompson has said recently, this is all good. Doesnt mean anything yet, but its still good to hear.

I was just thinking about this...surely if North and the Hawks can't agree on anything, we might be in with a chance?

Both Jade and the club would rather this than him being put into the draft, wouldn't they?

Also, this is from The Age on Peter Street -

Geelong football operations manager Garry Davidson said there was "a lot of water to pass under the bridge" before a deal was done with the Bulldogs.

A slight glimmer of hope for Streety?
I can only hope. :D

Street and Pick 22 for Jacobs
I wold rather jacobs than solomon, we have chapman ling kelly bartel ablett corey rahilly rooke enright and many more who can do solomons job.

Pick 22 for Jacobs.

Why throw in Street for free? The bulldogs and others are falling over themselves to get him. There are very few ruck options out there this year. We could actually get something good for Street like Pick 19 from the bulldogs ;). If the bombers want something extra for a Jacobs deal then that's what David Clarke is for.

According to an article on the afl.com.au site, Dean Solomon has decided to remain at Windy Hill. I guess you have to commend his loyalty, even though it would have been great if he ended up at our club.

Very true, and that has to be applauded.

Even if we could work out a trade that the Essendon Football Club could agree to, who's to say that Solomon would have been absolutely 100 per cent happy at Geelong?

Kind of makes a trade counter-productive, wouldn't it, if the target of a deal isn't content about being here and playing for the Cats in the first place?
