Not sure if this is 100% of its own thread - but I wan't to highlight a problem I see every game this year where is bleeds 1-2 goals... I just think he needs to be addressed. And its an easy fix.

It was specifically highlighted in our last game, especially in the wet but I've notice it in other games, where the defender attempts to spoil and he either misses it or it just goes backwards off the pack - why is it always the opposition player than recognises and runs into any open goal/break?

I just find it bemusing that despite how quick our defenders are, we are rarely goal side in contested situations which leads to open breaks all the time! I know our games/style are fast paced, but as much as we hurt them one way, we are easily exploited the other way.

I reckon if we can just minimise just a little - either by getting the ball forward or have someone ready for this out the back. I think further down the track when our defenders lost their legs, this could easily exploited by other teams.

Just a thought.

Understand the concern and it shits alot of tigerheads when it happens. But IMO, it comes down to the cost of sticking to a game plan and ours is what it is and leaking 2 flukes is part of that cost.
Our problem aint those 1 or 2 goals dude, our problem is purely a make hay while the sun shines Inside 50. Once that is fixed, steamroll time..;)

Our defence is dependant upon being able to understand where the ball will be. If we move the ball too quick into our 50, and it comes out too quickly, our defence won't have had time to set up into the correct positions. This , as far as I understand it, is why we move the ball slowly and deliberately when moving the ball out of our back half. Normally we have a spare man in defence that allows one person to go 3rd man up without being outnumbered if it falls out the back, but when we're not fully set up we don't.

On the flip side, sometimes it just gets out the back because a) our players completely failed to hold it up in transition through the midfield (which we're pretty reliant on with the press, otherwise it gets out), or b) our players didn't run hard enough back (or smart enough - an example that we saw a few times on the weekend is players running back to fill space but completly failing to either put pressure on the ball carrier as the pass, or to cover dangerous space).

Dont want to bag anyone to much about last saturday, the wet tips the scale towards the whole thing being a lottery, but I have to say that I have been watching Dea over the last few games and he seems to watch the ball to much and his direct opponent gains that meter or 2 that makes him an easy target down the field..it dont look like much at the time, but somehow the next move is to a target inside 50;)

Been a problem for a while. How Bummers and Water Closet beat us along with Norf in the final round last year.

I know it's to do with our "systems & set-ups" but the ease with which opposition teams constantly manage to bring the ball out of defence by kicking down the line along the boundary to one unmarked player after another under seemingly no pressure also drives me nuts. Sometimes I just wish we'd just go one on one a bit more when the situation dictates.

Also is it just me or do too many of players get too easily baulked and side-stepped? They need to watch the hips and feet of their opponents more often IMO.

Yeah ive noticed it with our defensive setup that should it spill behind the back we are gonners, that said doesnt happen too often, rance et al are damn good at keeping ball in front. What makes me cringe iswhen we have 2 or more defenders collide in a contest, losing their feet with the forward walzing into an open goal, just plain dumb

Yep, Batchelor crashed Rance this week and Morris crashed Rance last week. Both times the ball spilled goal side. While you like them to be desperate there is a time to use the brain as well. And if you are going to "go" it has to be smashed forward. It'll come with time but I suppose at least they're going hard at the pill.

Over the years, King has picked up plenty of goals over the back. Riewoldt is excellent at it. I think Edwards has kicked half his goals from the goalsquare this year. It happens to all teams, all defences. It's a funny=shaped ball - sometimes it is badly kicked and so spins a bit weird - then it bounces funny off the ground and off hands.

Never looks good when it's against you, though.

That is true jack is quite good at a deft tap to a loose ball ove the pack...tis a pattern of modern footy i spose

Don't like to ping Newy but he's normally the designated one hanging off the back of our defensive clearances, he's cost us a few goals this year with a few fumbles where he gets steamrolled by the defensive forwards, it's also a result of poor disposal from our clearances.

Defenders not staying goal side of their opponent inside 50 is an absolute pet hate of mine. That said, I think we're well ahead on the ledger of goals kicked because of it. I can think of half a dozen examples without trying. Edwards and Riewoldt feature prominently.
