It wont work until (i) our skills improve thus giving him the chance to lead into positions; and (ii) the forward line is cleared out - which wont happen until Richo retires

Hawthorn do the above well. We do it terribly.

Keeping Deledio at FF and giving him an average of 2-3 goals per game / 10 possessions per game is an absolute waste.

Time to put him on the wing.

AS much as I love the lug - RICHO, (along with Tivs, Johnno and Bowden), is the final "hurdle" to having a fully New Breed of players at the club.

However - IF Richo's stats are up - which would amount to an expected average of 3-4 goals a match, he should rightly retain his spot.

However youre right - we need to hit the target and our skills appear woeful at the moment.

PS I'm starting to wonder if Richo's presence is truly having a positive effect on the rest of the group or are they dumping the responsibilty of winning wholly on his shoulders purely because - he is RICHO!

Called for it during last season and I am going to call for it again this year. For the sake of development Richo needs to play as a lead up CHF. Now I know he is getting on in years but he has the fitness to play this role and is still going to require a very good opponent to watch him.

If he can win me $750 when he wins the Coleman Medal then you might start thinking a little different.
If we can get 50-60 goals out of him then thats a win.
A few bursts in the midfield will be handy for us too.

Speaking to some of my Tiges patients today, they say the big issue is delivery to the forwards.........Deledio is a GUN midfielder......he should learn to deal with tags and become a GUN midfielder in the AFL.

When he gets older and slower then put him a FP but FFS the kid is a gem and is being wasted up from IMO.:thumbsu:

I actually don't think Delidio has ever really been a midfielder. I could be wrong but in a TV interview last year when he kicked 5 (I think) the commentators asked how he enjoyed the change and his comment was to the effect that other than the last year or two before being drafted had he played in the middle. He'd effectively been a forward all his life.. Not sure how correct that is however.

Play him in the centre all year , even if he struggles . Put Hughes in the forward line. l. Deledio can be rested in the forward line. Raines wil never be a mid fielder and should be sent back to the back pocket now.

Delidio is an out & out midfielder, & one of the few good ones we have. TW + co must be friggin stupid to think otherwise.

Terry Tan the new coach ,he has got it worked out just take a shovel with you terry tan the tinman to mop up the crap you talk bud:thumbsu:

I think the commentary said it best that Deledio playing forward is a luxury we can't afford. Sure if Richmond were a top 4 contender and had a working midfield we could put deledio up front exploit other teams but we don't have the quality yet for this to happen.

Lids was picked up as a onballer did well in his first year then got tagged heavy an couldn't handle it. he needs to do a foley an just deal with it, use his football brain. one of our best kickers at the club a waste at FF. play him on the ball or at very least the half forward line.

i doubt if he will play at ff all year we have to many tall forwards who would be better to play ff. we kept schulz so play him. polak looks like playing forward this year more, patto simmo could be rested up forward, hughes might step up. we need our best kickers bring the ball in eg foley, newman,Lids, morton (i hope). if they can't do that then get plays like tiva to just bomb it long with our talls in the forward line.
we don't really need another small forward type we have brown, petts etc

Hes going to be a good forward if thats his career path.

But...

We were all hoping he was going to be a STAR midfielder and I'm afraid the coaches are taking the easy way out because they dont know how to teach someone how to break a hard tag. Many of us were putting our hopes on him dominating consistently in the midfield and replacing our slower, older guys. Now it seems we're freaking out about losing richo soon and we're looking for a patchup job because hughes and schulz aren't coming on. When will Richmond understand that a team is built from the midfield up, not from the half back flank up...or the forwardline up.

Geelong has 5-10 guys that can play entire matches, not just stints, as a specialist small forward OR a midfielder. Ablett, Chapman, Johnson are all superstars in either position.

I remember that interview. He can obviously kick the goals, he just needs to be put in a position where he can kick them. full forward is far too deep I think, maybe a CHF position where he can at least use his pace and speed, and can easily move in to the middle as required. FF is way too deep for him though, he's just going to get blocked off at every chance.

Lids would be a bloody champion in team with tough, gun onballers doing the dirty work, winning clearances and controlling the midfield like the cats.

when you have a dominant midfield it not only makes your forward line look a lot better but it also releves a lot of pressure on the defence because a lot less clean ball is being deliverd to the forwards advantage.

So many of the west coast fans were disapointed we went for the tough onballers like Masten/Ebert/Selwood instead of the flashier Morton/Maric and those types after losing the great break away pace and excitment from Judd and Cousins.

quote from weaver sumed it up for me
I'd just point out that that took no account of club needs and who held the picks.

I think we should take Masten at 2. He is the most likely to end up like Kerr. He and Foley would be a 10-year centre square combo that would go along way to building a winning midfield.

Cotchin is better than Pettifer but a similar player. Not as good as Nathan Brown.

For mine the question is - if you had a choice between Kerr and Nathan Brown who would you take?

Both can be match winners - but put Kerr in the midfield and LeCras up forward and you can win. Put Boyd in the middle and Brad Johnson up forward and you lose.

With Brown and Pettifer on the HFF for another 3 years I really don't think we can afford to spend so heavily on another small, slowish, low-stamina, genius.

I reckon you lot are too desperate for that "superstar midfielder", or you've still got the "next Judd" comments of post-2005 ringing in your ears.

If Deledio can prove himself as a 21 year old forward and get you 40 goals and kick some bags this season then that will be extremely beneficial to his future.

Luke Hodge is our most valuable player because Clarkson can throw him back to give us some rebound and a cool head (so to speak). If we're losing the clearances and lacking some class then he's straight into the middle and he creates a nightmare match-up for taggers when he drifts forward. It's easy to call him a midfielder but Hodge's true value is his ability to move anywhere and make that area of the ground a clear advantage for our side. Really he is a true utility, an elite level midfielder who can create goals and take contested marks up forward and provide precise delivery from defence.

Deledio has the physical gifts and skills to have this type of impact on Richmond in the future. He already has a bag of 5 goals to his name and I've seen him change a game from a wing before my very eyes (granted it was two years ago now).

A few shifts as a permanent forward is not conceding his future by any means. The kid is 190 cm, strong in the air and runs like a gazelle. It is a rare mix that you would do well to utilise everwhere you can.

Agreed... playing him from the goalsquare is a waste.
Lids is a midfielder, though not a pure extractor of the ball. Wing or forward flank for me. If he has a license to roam between half-forward and half-back, he will average 25 possessions per week and the thing you know with Lids, they will all be quality.
On Friday our best footy coincided with Deledio playing up the ground and delivering the ball into our forward 50.
You gotta let thoroughbreds like this guy run...

He should be on a wing. At the moment he really isn't an inside midfielder but that doesn't mean he can't develop into one. I think people forget that Chris Judd was a wingman for the first few years of his career. When he had mastered being an outside midfielder the Eagles moved him into the Centre and his play went to another level. If I was Richmond I would do the same thing with Deledio.

WTF are they thinking putting the only bloke that can actually hit a taget in the forward 50 up forward himself.
Mind boggling

Although i have not got the best knowledge of your list, i can't understand why Wallace feels the need to turn him into an undersized FF when you are developing a few currently. He is tall for a midfielder so let that be an advantage there. Maybe not a bad idea when he is much older and maybe has a few old injuries to play him forward

I dont mind him playing up forward, as long as its not for the whole game. Just too god damn predictable. He is way too fast for any defender. But he has to play some midfield as well. Just too good a player to be in the forward line that had (by memory) the least inside 50s in the league last year. Now that is a waste.

lids should play hf or the wing so he can get more of the ball and be also a cramming hf.he could even b like a aaron davey
