Because everyone is different - is that so hard to grasp?
The rest of your post is bullshyte and you know it

I just think that labelling someone with a mental illness may stop them from "thinking" they can get better.

Your mind is THE most powerful tool in curing yourself, whether you have cancer or depressed etc

Oh really? So you have it do you?

no but let me guess, you do therefore you know everything there is to know about depression

I've grown up with someone who's had it their whole life and she wasn't running around the internet bleeting she has 'depression' she really is extremely withdrawn and sick. So miss divine  I've had to deal with depression.

i've spoken to her psychiatrist many times and he's told how important it is for her to take steps to help herself.

I didn't run to the internet and bleet it out, I was just saying that I have it and was trying to help the person who started this bloody thread. You can't really say you know more than me just because you have lived with someone with it. I've lived with my Mother my whole life who has very severe depression so I know what it is like to have it and live with someone with it. Thats great that you don't (like many people on this site) think I have depression, but what the hell would you know? I've been getting better, that is why I am able to go on the internet and do things now, I used to be like your friend but thanks to medication and councilling I am getting alot better.

BTW I never said that I was some kind of Depression expert, but unless you have actually had it, you have no idea what it is like.

i'm not saying you don't have it, no offence i couldn't care less if you do or don't, you're the one who said i have no idea about depression and i'm telling you i do.

Well i'm getting pretty sick of you thinking that you are an expert on everything and think you know all. I was just saying that you seem to not really know what it is like.

The power of positive thought is a wonderful drug, so I agree with what Nicky has said. But you also need to have other principals in place to help the recovery process

I find it a little weird that my opinion is being given the cold shoulder. I feel i've only added positive opinions to this depression thread. I think that my opinions naturally make people (who are on medication) feel guilty like i'm i'm sitting in judgement of their choice to take medication.

I know of a few people that wouldn't be here today if it weren't for anti depressents.

I have been told before by my own mother that i'm bipolar so i went out and got a second and third opinion and guess what? The suggestion that i am bipolar was laughed at by professionals.

I understand that me saying 'the mind is powerful - yudda yudda yudda' can be taken to imply that 'depressed people aren't doing enough to help themselves'. I'm sorry for offending anyone if that is how they're reading what i'm saying. I have no intention to invalidate your depression or to say that 'i know better'.

I'm trying to offer positive suggestions that i would offer my family members or friends who suffer depression (or any other illness). I'm all about empowering oneself as much as you possibly can. I probably come across more tactless than what i do in reality.

I haven't read the whole thread, but seems there has been a lot of arguing & misconceptions about depression.

Most people suffer minor depression in their lives, when something goes wrong in their lives etc. There is also depression which is caused by a chenical imbalance in the brain, people can't just "get over it", they need therapy & medication.

I have lost two people close to me through depression, one a famuly member & one a close friend. Neither of these people displayed outward signs of depression, which is why unfortunately, no one could see the inner turmoil & do something to help them & prevent them taking their lives.

The people who don't talk about their depression, or seek help are the ones most at risk.

So people, don't just look at someone who suffers depression as weak, they need support of friends & family. Learn the signs to look for & if you think that someone you know could be depressed, try & convince them to get help, the alternative is not nice.

Lighten the mood by laughing about the deaths of two people, yeah right, if I had have done that, you would have been calling for me to be banned.

yeah i can understand you being offended/raw - i'd be really upset if someone teased me about that.

YOTC i think you know deep in your heart that you owe mantis an apology :thumbsu:

Whilst suspended I kept a close eye on this thread and found myself agreeing with my usual enemies on this topic.

Murray knows what he's talking about, as does mantis.

nicky is being innocent in what she says, blunt, but innocent. Her heart is in the right place, but she's being insensitive and perhaps ignorant of some views or scientific facts.

PerthCrow and blangerang have the combined IQ of my dog (actually, kelpie's are pretty smart, that might have been unfair on my dog).

PC, you saying that Brittney's folks should "be shot" for allowing their 11 year old son to suffer from depression, an illness, is the equivalent of me blaming YOUR parents, and claiming they should be shot, for the fact that you're deaf.

That would be harsh, just as harsh as you're being towards Brittany's folks.

Depression is an illness, the very definition of it concludes there is a chemical imbalance in someone's brain leading them to feel depressed or suicidal with or without a stimulus to set it off.

It doesn't amtter whether your family was killed, whether you were r*ped, whether you're a billionaire playboy who shags supermodels all day, if you suffer from depression you are going to feel very low.

Being depressed on the other hand is something EVERYONE goes through at some point, and it's based on a stimuli setting off the feeling of being depressed. This is something that basically, everyone has to deal with, you shouldn't fight being depressed with medication. It isn't healthy.

But if you choose to not fight depression with medication, among other treatments, you are playing with fire.

Telling someone to 'just get over it' is about the most irresponsible thing you can do. you may as well hand a drunk driver his keys and send them on their way.

RJ i've seen 2 of your posts today and i wish to tell you that I'm finding you refreshingly fantabulouso to read.

Have you had an epiphany? I haven't had one for a while but i know what they're like so good on you if you have :D

as a friend once said to me 'an epiphany is better than a conumdrum ;)

Well said. That there ^^ is 12 long-winded pages of a thread, summed up in a nutshell.
