There has been a flurry of "who will play at position A, if players x and y get injured" recently.

In the US, they publish (club published) depth charts for each position. This doesn't involve naming your 4 CHB prospects in order, as in reality a forward would move back before playing a 17 year old kid (possibly).
Because of this players can appear in more than one position. What do you think:

e.g.
Key Defender: Talia, Hartigan, Lever, Ramsey, Jenkins, Otten, O'Brien, Kelly ...

Key Forward: Walker, Jenkins, Lynch, Dear, McGovern, Ramsey, Hartigan, O'Brien, ...

Small defender: Brown, Laird, Jaensch, Hampton, ....

Tagger: ?

Inside Mids: Thompson, Sloane, Laird, M Crouch, Lyons, Ellis-Yolmen, Brown,

Outside Mids: ?

Inside/Outside Mids:

etc. etc.

What categories would be best to describe a modern AFL list? Who would play where, in case of emergency?

what you have is a pretty good start
versatility certainly is a key isn't it? i'd also go with availability as another.
Ruck options another position

long kickers? high efficiency kickers?
effective tacklers?
turnover interceptors.

leg speed.

Hard to do these days with the positional lines being blurred more and more.
They almost need to create new positions.

Its clear now that there arent really forward or back flanks. These players are virtually midfielders.

Could have like the OP does (with an example of each position)
Key Back - Talia
Medium Back - Lever
Small Lockdown back - Brown
Running Backs - Seedsman
Inside Mids - Crouch
Outside Mids - Smith
Ruck - Sauce
Half Forward/Mid - Knight
Defensive Forward - N/A
Running Key Forward - Lynch
Stay at home Key Forward - Walker
Foward/Ruck - Jenkins
Crumming Forward - Eddie

Or something like that.

I love a good depth chart but I think it's so hard to do for AFL. So many varying position types!

Especially when Dom Pyke is talking about playing a "total football" style that revolves around player versatility.
