Question for the likes of the Ford Fairlanes of this world - what year did Dexter Kennedy go to Port Adelaide from Westies? And any lasting memories of him?

Can't quite remember the exact year but I think it would be around 82-83 as I'm pretty sure he didn't play in a premiership side for us - although I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it was early 80's.

As for memories I can't think of anything outstanding and he seemed to coast along at times..........was a little frustrating to watch at times as he appeared to not always give 100%.

I'm sure Ford and a few others will have lots more to contribute.

Yeah - he didn't play in a Port premiership team and he wasn't in Westies' 83 premiership team. The coasting recollection was one I had too.

Football Times Year Book 1983 in the 'summer diary'

West Adelaide and State ruckman Dexter Kennedy signed with Port Adelaide. He had played 235 games since starting in 1970 when he had the distinction of being the youngest player to appear in league football. He was 15 years, 11 months and two days-and a fourth year student at Adelaide Boys' High School- when he made his debut.

So he played for West from 1970-82 and played 50 games for Port in 83 and 84.

Looks like I'm a bit late. I remember the irony of Dexter spending 12 largely fruitless years at West and moving to Port for some finals success ... Port missed the finals in his first year and West won the Premiership. By late 1984 or early 1985 he was struck down by a mystery virus which ruined his balance, he was quite ill, lost a lot of weight and never played again.

I have one enduring recollection of his playing in a game v North at Prospect in 1983. He was getting flogged in the ruck and Port were probably 8 goals down late in the third quarter. Russell switched him to full forward and threw Benny Harris into ruck. Benny ripped the North rucks apart, Dexter took a few grabs up forward (Colin Whitehead playing in one of his two league games for Port kicked 3 goals) and Port scored a memorable win with another huge last 1/4 at Prospect. We hardly won another game for the year after that ... :(

He did wear a lot of flack from supporters for not "putting in" at times (maybe too many). Trouble was he played his best footy against Port, so expectations were high, and there was no one for him to "get up" against ... ;)

The only real recollection I have of Dexter Kennedy is after he finished with football. He and Mark Aiston were at Alberton to cover a Port match for the ABC. I had gone to primary school with Mark so I was having a chat with him and he introduced me to Dexter. I got the impression Dexter would sooner have been somewhere else. He was pretty much as interested in his job then as he had been in playing for Port; in other words, not much.
