CARLTON president and Telstra Dome chief executive Ian Collins is heavily sedated in intensive care after he had triple bypass surgery last Sunday.
Mr Collins had a heart attack after Saturday's Collingwood-Carlton match at the MCG.
He experienced complications following the initial surgery Sunday morning, but a second operation later that day was successful and he is expected to make a full recovery.
He will remain in the Epworth Hospital in Richmond for at least the next few days.
"Yesterday was a very harrowing day for Mary (Mr Collins' wife) and the family; thankfully, the most difficult period has passed," said Carlton chief executive Michael Malouf.
"Everyone at the Carlton Football Club is thinking of Mary and the family while wishing Ian a speedy and full recovery."
Steven Wise, a director on the board of Telstra Dome, has been appointed acting chief executive of the stadium while Mr Collins recovers.
I hope Collo makes a full and quick recovery has been very good as president IMO.
