I was wondering if any know's of a decent digital camera for taking pictures at the football? I have a camera right now (Sony Mavica 10X Zoom) but it really doesn't work that well with movement. I'm going to try again this weekend (during the Glenorchy/Lauderdale game down here) with it, using a tripod to hold the camera steady. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone know's a of a better camera for taking moving pictures.

Some of the pictures come out fuzzy, and with extra bodies, extra balls, etc.

Any digital camera will do a mediocre job at taking action shots if you can't change the settings manually, moreso at night.

As a general guide, during the day, ramp the shutter speed to as fast as possible - I find that 1/200 sec is about as slow as you want to go for most sport shots - You can go slower, but you'd better have a tripod and want to take photos of stationary players!

At night, set the ISO setting as high as it will go. Then start from 1/125 sec and go as fast as the light will allow (digital cameras are brilliant for this because you get instant feedback as to what is the right setting).

If you can't change the manual settings, then you'll have to shoot and hope unfortunately...

I've got a Kodak DX6490 (4MP & 10X Optical Zoom) and it does a pretty good job of action/sports shots... I've never taken any shots at the footy, but I have taken a fair few shots of my cricket team... I've got a photogallery online, if you're interested:

I might go catch some footy this weekend, you've inspired me... Where is Glenorchy V Lauderdale being played? I'm a Lauderdale local, so if it's a home match, I'll walk over to the ground... If it's in Glenorchy, I'll leave my camera at home - don't want to get muged...

the sony multi burst feature allows 2or 3 shots in quick succession allows for good action shots. (not found in all there range}

other brand names have thier own version of this feature.

Yeah my Kodak does that, except it has a burst of about 8 continuous shots. It also has a manual function where you can manually adjust the ISO, shutter speeds etc - as Des was saying...

I don't know what your budget is but the Canon EOS-300D with a bigger lense is certainly worth a look. I'm guessing the camera with a basic lense would set you back about $1700 thenthe cost of a longer lense will depend on size. The shutter speed can be set up to 1/4000 and ISO can be upto 1600.

The camera I have, I got second hand for about $400, it's okay, takes some good non-moving shots. I can manually focus the camera, haven't been successful yet, my only problem is, with the viewer at the back, it's got a tinted sort of screen. Which makes it hard to take photos in sunlight.

I guess the reason some of my photos have come out fuzzy is becausae of the movement of the actual camera, when you press the button it moves.

I have found that if you're at the footy/cricket trying to take action shots, and suffering from blurred images due to hand movement - a good tip is to find something to rest your elbows on - like a boundary fence, that should enable you to hld it still for the shot.

Got a tripod that my dad used to use when he was a photographer, should help this weekend, if I can find somewhere away from the sun this weekend, which doesn't look like being a problem with the forcasted whether this weekend.

I wasn't aware that the Mavica's came in 10x zoom (do you mean 3x optical and 3.3x digital?)

anyway, the camera you have would definitely have manual settings that control the aperture and shutter speed. In terms of taking decent moving pictures, if your shots are blurry, it isnt a fault of the camera (unless you're talking of purple fringes?). Sounds like what you need is a tripod, not a whole new camera.

also i'd say you've got it on automatic settings, and youre focussed in on a dark spot, so the camera is leaving the shutter open for too long.

I find that that has been my problem, I started off with the auto settings, which I have only just changed, and I have seen more decent pictures this way, then with the audto settings.

With the camera (which makes it hard to take photos) is that you have to almost hold the button for 3 seconds before it takes the picture.

If the weather is fine this weekend, I am going to try and use this tripod, hopefully this will fix my problems. Is there a way of fixing the viewing screen? It looks like it's tinted, which makes taking photos very hard.

Don't use it. Use the viewfinder to take photos and the LCD screen to review them.

I was looking at getting a Canon A70 but since they have released the A80 model I'd also be interested in hearing anyone with feedback on these.

Don't know about A80s.. but A70s are sweet little machines IMO.. very easy to use..

Haven't printed any photos on photo paper yet.. kinda scared of bugging up the paper.. and it isn't cheap.. seem nice enough on normal paper though.
