Wow I love these. This week's was even better than Round 1. Just completely fascinating and a whole side of football you don't usually get to see.

MOAR DISSECTIONS

Thought I could summarize the dissection of the game in Inside Football this week.
Interesting to note only three players scored an 8 - Conca, Deledio and Riewoldt.
Six scored a 7 - Chaplin, Cotchin, King, Martin, Morris and Petterd.
Four scored a 6 - Grigg, Grimes, Houli and McGuane.
Two scored a 5 - Edwards and Tuck.
Three scored a 4 - Jackson, Newman and Rance (my boy will bounce back).
Three scored a 3 - Batchelor, Maric and Vickery.
One scored a 2 - Ellis.

For the Saints, two got an 8 - McEvoy (deserved) and Montagna (should've got a 7 in a swap with Nick Riewoldt).
Also thought Cotch was worth an 8 (bias?) ;)
But it goes to show our scope for improvement, starting this week. :thumbsu:

Love the round 3 one - very interesting stuff. Really look forward to getting these each week. Who would think manning the mark more aggressively would make such a difference to our game? Really insightful.

Thought that too...and then thought maybe he's just giving us nothing this week. I mean seriously, hands in the air standing the mark? Grigg stood next to Libba...that's it? What else did he do?
Methinks Dimma is flying below the radar pre Pies.
Stats at the start were good though, showed what we had to counter to win.

Could be the case, but the vision looked pretty good. They did fluff a lot of those kicks when the players manned the mark well. Seems they put a lot of work into Libba, which came off really well, we smashed them in centre clearances which they had dominated in the first two weeks.

Don't suppose someone can link me the dissection for this week? I'm a fully paid up member but don't get the emails for some reason. Have just emailed RFC_Official but i want to watch it now!

I think it shows how important the little things are. Dimma says they wanted to make the Bulldogs players kick 3 degrees higher -- that's a tiny amount but it's enough to make the ball float to a contest.

These are the kinds of "one percenters" that win matches.

Although, yeah, obviously there's a lot more to our game plan than standing the mark. But even these insights are really fascinating. For me it's almost worth the price of membership alone!

The standing the mark thing has been around a while, a major part of Pies and Saints frontal pressure styles from the past 4-5 years, same at Freo now. Hawks and Geelong were always big on disrupting the view of a player with mark/free peripherally also, by having man on the mark who is near a boundary line move in field and raise/wave hands to try and prevent the switch.

But for a younger, less experienced side, you have to learn these things at some point, and make it part and parcel of your team pressure.

Me too. Stig?

Stig every now and then we have a coach come on roar vision stating goals for up coming games. I would love, whether its richo or someone else, to ask a coach about our lack of tackle numbers. Its a real worry.

Thanks.

Tckling is a funny stat.... it means you are second to the ball. At the moment we are not. What you have to understand is we are all bout applying pressure on the player disposing the ball and then setting ourselves up for the next contest. Now days tackling is not as effective as it once was due to the abbility of most players to get a clean handball anyway. Players almost walk into tackles these days to draw a player out of the next contest.

I've always intuitively thought this. One thing I've never understood is the play on call with the man on the mark just standing there and not putting any pressure on. You don't have to overcommit, just start coming forward and make them rush the kick a little!

Yeah, DD, since Hardwick's playing days in current incarnation and in similar form going a long way further back.

It's a curious initiative - one the one hand it seeks to inform and enlighten, one the other the part of the subject matter which is most interesting, is highly restricted in terms of what you want to be giving away.

I say it's better for punters to be informed and enlightened a little than not at all - brings them closer to the club and players and makes the game a richer experience for them. :thumbsu:

And as far as propaganda tools go, it's first rate. ;):D

Yep, tackling will never win you a grand final. Oh..wait....

Exactly! This has always confused me.

It's a bit like looking at the stat of how many ruck contests we've won, which are pretty low I believe, on raw figures. Yet, on Sunday, our first around the grounds ball up was about 5 mins in to the second quarter! Coincidentally the free kick count was way up.

This is true to a certain degree but it also doesnt mean we aren't poor in this area. We play a similar game style to the hawks/ cats and we are no where near their tackle numbers. All i want is a tackle count around 70/80.

I was convinced that said 'Tickling is a funny stat...' Nut- which of course it would be. Does make me wish for a whole new raft of stats:
Jumper punches
Teammate hugs
Scoreboard looks
Finger points
Arm raises
Head shakes
Chest bumps
Simulated handballs
Incredulous looks
Hair tidies
Groin adjustments
Fence slams

Just watched the round 3 video. Nice work from Dimma there!

Great to see the boys ramp up that defensive pressure and the whole 'forcing them to kick over finger tips' was great to hear. It's amazing how those little things contribute to turn overs.
