There's a million threads on the Ottens deal, so I apologise for initiating yet another.

But I feel it necessary to dedicate an entire thread to my disgust at the probability, if the reports are accurate, that we are now to lose Brad Ottens for only Picks 12 and 16.

Originally it was "two prime cut First Rounders", which was watered down to a "Single Digit and another First Rounder", which now, it seems is only going to be two Double Digit picks!

Project this year's Preliminary Final one year forward - Ottens would have undoubtedly steered the Cats into the Grand Final in that match against Brissy, and may well have been enough for them on the big day.

We have missed a great opportunity here.

Geelong have completely rubber-gloved us on this deal.

it appears we may get #9 + #16.Ghost.

cheers!

Chin up. The trading of Ottens is a turning point for the Club. No more overpaid under- performing show ponnies that don't deliver.
Whatever we get for him is a bonus. Other than the top 6 - I hear the draft evens out. We'll be able to get the best available tall with any pick 9 - 12.
We're going to have 4 maybe 5 ( if freo don't want it) picks in the Top 20.
2 midfielders a KPP and a tall - and that's just in the first two rounds.
And Simmonds. Exciting times ahead.

Yep, we have to take the positives out of this, we will be better off without people like Ottens who put money far far ahead of the club. We can't change the losing culture at the club if there are people around like that, we need all the new kids to be learning from the true Richmond blokes at the club like Richo, Bowden and Johnson, blokes who will always put the club first.

ghosty, think you should be happy if this deal goes through. 2 pretty good picks, and lets be honest - if ottens gets you's 2 good picks nick stevens should have got port 3 (at least) good picks last year, and what did they get?? think the trouble is that too many people are saying if nathan thompson is worth picks 10 and 26 then what is ottens worth?? who knows what the kangas were thinking there. that said, 9 and 16 are better than 10 and 26.

GJJ, this is not a negative. Let geelong pay $500k a year for this injured underachiever. He won't improve any more.

picks 12 & 16 are a steal for the big underachiever!

when the likes of even Ray Hall expose the dud in round 1 next year, we wont hear anyone complain about us being rubber gloved.

:D

At least we'll get something for him. Still would have liked more though, but things could be worse. Glad to see the back of the impaled cripple after today. We had high hopes for him, quite right to feel let down. Just hope our supporters don't keep going on and on about it in the future. I'd be embarassed if we sound like a bunch of bitter history-grasping Footscray supporters. After today, let it go.

Two first round picks for a guy who hasn't had any influence on a game of football in 3 years in an absolute steal.

There's a post on bomberblitz.com where someone has found (using the 98/99/00 drafts as example) that you're just as likely to get a gun player from picks 11-20 as you are from picks 1-10.

look at the positives, what this says is that miller and tw are not going to tolerate blokes who do not want to be there....we put everything into brad and probably spent close to 3 million developing him, if hw wants to walk walk, others want to walk our way.....we sift the ********eee from the cream be positive

Yeah, I agree ... let him have it in the first round, and then let it go. None of this bitter, childish Bulldogs "Judas" crap.

I must clarify ... my initial complaint still stands - we appear to have been bent over on this one. Which is one of my biggest gripes on the issue. Not just whether or not Brad was worth what we eventually got for him, but that the perception is now that we've been dudded.

Our boys said point blank that we'd only accept a lot more than what we settled for.

Will the same thing re-occur now if say Cogs wants out in the next year or two? Or Schultz in two years? Or Deledio in three?

look it's ashame that a 24 yo no2 pick and a 23 year old no.3 pick didn't reap us better rewards.

persoanlly I think a 2 or 3 pick should be worth 2 high picks 3-4 years later

However I refuse to spend another second worrying about spilt milk

future>past

No big worry. We just ask for something extraordinary and then 'fold' for what is reasonable. You never go into a deal giving the minimum you are prepared to accept and never budging. There always has to be a compromise.

Miller did well in holding out for as long as he did. There is no way known that Ottens is worth more than pick 12 and 16. We still won on this deal.

I think we did ok at the end of it. We got Simmonds, picks 12 & 16 for Ottens and Fiora and still retained our No 1 pick in the PSD. It would have been nice to get more but I think what we got for Ottens was not that bad and Simmonds was a bargain buy :)

What's funny is that "Bomber" Thompson has been quoted as saying that they would be happy for Ottens to kick 30-40 goals - he must be dreaming!

Otten's goal kicking record:-

1998 - 2 goals
1999 - 21 goals
2000 - 30 goals
2001 - 46 goals
2002 - 27 goals
2003 - 10 goals
2004 - 16 goals

152 goals in 129 games
