GWS Giants
Squad list
MVP: Nicholas Shipley
Arguably the most talented side in Division 2, GWS didn't really get the consistent performances they'd have been hoping for from their big names. Finishing third on the ladder, it was the lesser known players who stood up. They could end up providing up to 10 starting 22 players for the Allies side, and a number of first round draft picks.
Round 1
GWS 12.10 82 def by Sydney 12.14 88
This was the closest match Sydney had the for Championships, so GWS should be happy with that. One of the major arguments for the Academy program is developing players from other sporting backgrounds, and 190cm Nicholas Shipley is one of those having only played football for 3 years now. As a versatile forward/midfielder, he finished with 2 goals from 21 touches, 9 clearances and 7 tackles. 173cm Charlie Spargo had 24 touches in the middle, while overaged Connor Owen-Auburn kicked 4 goals as a medium sized forward.
Round 2
GWS 7.16 58 def by Gold Coast 12.3 75
BOG went to another 19 year old in Tom Highmore, a 192cm defender who rebounds and intercepts particularly well. Jarrod Brander presented well, but struggled with his finishing - as did the whole team, a major reason for the loss. Shipley again dominated, whether he was in the middle or up forward, but wasn't the cleanest with his disposal.
Round 3
GWS 14.4 88 def Tasmania 12.5 77
Once again, Highmore and Owen-Auburn showed enough to suggest teams may regret passing on them last year. Both performed well, and may not last until the rookie draft this time around. 179cm Laine Fitzgerald was good through the middle with 24 touches and 6 clearances, while 187cm Doultan Langlands was promising with 18 touches and 7 marks. Neither are Academy players, so will no doubt attract the interest of all 18 clubs.
Round 4
GWS 17.14 116 def Northern Territory 9.11 65
Arguably the best player from GWS this year, Jack Powell had a best on ground performance through the midfield. At 180cm he worked hard all day to finish with 24 touches, 8 clearances, 7 marks and 7 tackles. But Shipley again presented a strong case to be considered the player of most interest draft wise, with 25 touches and 3 goals. His ball winning and versatility at 190cm, is reason enough for first round discussion.
Round 5
GWS 8.9 57 def Brisbane 7.11 53
Having been uncharacteristically quiet so far, 200cm Nathan Richards showed his versatility by competing well up forward. Strong in a number of contests, his work allowed 176cm Rhys Pollock to kick 4 goals with the small forward pouncing on anything that hit the ground. 183cm Brendan Myers was the best midfielder on the day, a clearance specialist he is also good above his head.
