Squad list

MVP: Jarrod Osborne

Top of the ladder with 5 wins from 5 matches, thanks largely to the work of their smalls up forward and in the midfield. Solid team performances got the wins, without the standout players that other teams have.

Round 1

Sydney 12.14 86 def GWS 12.10 82

In what is shaping up as a long 18 months for Nick Blakey, he put in a best on ground performance with 3 goals from 17 touches. At 194cm, his midfield and forward work is excellent and Sydney, Brisbane and North will all be trying to win his signature. 19 year old Jarrod Osborne was strong in the midfield with 22 touches and 10 tackles, and received good support from 183cm James Bell.

Round 2

Sydney 18.12 120 def NT 9.9 63

A big game for the Sydney forwards, 173cm Jack Hardman kicked 5 goals with 182cm Luke Skrivanic and Nick Blakey also kicking three a piece. Hardman kicked 4 goals alone in the third quarter, he's the type who can change a game in just minutes. At CHB, 189cm Mitchell Rogers was strong in the air and on the ground. His dad played for both Essendon and Geelong, but not enough games to qualify as a F/S. While he used to live in SA, so likewise isn't eligible as an Academy player.

Round 3

Sydney 15.11 101 def Gold Coast 5.5 35

Once again, Blakey stood out up forward with his strong marking and big leap to kick 4 goals. He finished with 18 kicks and 0 handballs, so his disposal preference is clear. Rogers and Skrivanic were again good, as was 191cm Michael Carroll who can play at either end of the ground. 19 year old Jake Brown was good in the midfield, he'd have been disappointed to go undrafted after an average 2016. 181cm Bailey Stewart was also good, with 22 disposals through the middle.

Round 4

Sydney 13.11 89 def Brisbane 8.10 58

Luke Skrivanic was best on ground with 3 goals from 13 touches and 6 marks. He's got a good turn of pace, and can play through the middle as needed. Meanwhile the names in the best were all well known and repeats of the previous matches - Brown, Hardman, Osborne and Rogers. Brown in particular dominated the midfield battle, winning his own ball and tackling well.

Round 5

Sydney 8.12 60 def Tasmania 8.10 58

Sydney finished with a cleansweep after trailing at 3/4 time, thanks to two goals from underaged Jack Hardman in the final quarter. Fellow 17 year old, Christian Loone was good all day down back. Skrivanic played more midfield minutes than in previous weeks, and finished in the bests along with Osborne. But overall, it was a disappointing day for the Swans.
