I have ,"ALONG CAME POLLY", on my computer, however, whenever I click play, I get a black screen and no-sound. Downloaded Divx and the codec pack, but it still doesn't work. ANy suggestions?

Also, if I wanted to put this on a CD to play on my DVD player what would be required?

Windows Media Player is worth a shot, if you've got version 9 - the major advantage is that if you've got Automatic Codec Downloading turned on, it'll go get the appropriate codec by itself, which is nice.

Firstly, find out exactly which codec it is using. Go to http://avicodec.duby.info/ where you can download a codec checker. Once you do that, you could see about getting the right codec.

Divx files normally have a '.avi' extension, so you could try renaming it.

To play on your DVD, it depends a bit on your DVD player. Some players (and these aren't necessarily high-end) will natively support DivX and Xvid as well as VCD and SVCD. Most DVD's support VCD and SVCD, so check the documentation with your player.

If it doesn't play DivX files, you can convert them to VCD (mpeg1) or SVCD (mpeg2) format. There are a number of programs that will do that.

Downloaded the file. What is it meant to do. Just shows a list of about 20 codecs and a picture of a sound icon with a red - sign. What am I meant to do?

While the WMP auto codec download feature is a nice idea, a lot of the time it just doesn't seem to work.

AVIcodec will have three bars down the bottom of the page (File, Video, Audio). If you look carefully, one of them will say "not supported". Click on the "web" link next to the unsupported codec and the appropriate webpage will appear, from which you can download the missing codec.

It's been a while since I've actually had to download a codec, but... I think if one of them is blank you should try clicking on the "web" link (on the right hand side of the bars I mentioned). Let me know what happens...

Once you've installed AVIcodec, and have it up and running, click on 'select', and choose the file.

The second bar at the bottom will say something like
Code:
 Video : 552 MB, 578 Kbps, 23.975 fps, 512*288 (16:9), DIV3 = DivX v3 ;-) MPEG-4 (Low-Motion), Supported

Th essential bit is the bit after the equals sign, in the above case 'DivX v3'.

It will also mention the codec next to the file name.

One thing I have noted is that if you have installed later DivX codecs and have never installed DivX 3.11 then sometimes the video doesn't work. It may be worth getting the older version, installing that, and then installing the latest DivX (and XviD, while your at it) codecs.

Not sure what kind of bandwidth you have.... but this is the ULTIMATE codecs pack.

http://ftp.idilis.ro/windows/Codecs/acemcp595probeta2.exe

I have used this for a little while and its great. Has about 100 or so codecs, some proprietary ones too.

In addition, it doesnt load any spyware or adware stuff at all which is fantastic really.

Only downside is that its about 33mb but well worth the download. This WILL solve your problem.
