I asked a group of people today whether they prefer pikelets or pancakes and they laughed and told me that they're the same thing. I've always thought that they had a different taste, although I always eat pikelets cold. Could that alter the taste and confuse me that they were different things when, apparently, they're the same?

I always thought pikelets were a bit smaller than pancakes and they always tasted amazing warm with butter, whereas pancakes was more a lemon and sugar sort of item?

As a kid, Mum made pikelets.

Pikelets are smaller.
Pikelets are thicker and heavier once they rise in the pan.
Pikelets can be served hot or cold, whereas pancakes are served hot.
Toppings though are whatever - we'd put butter and jam on them.

Also the interwebz told me so.... http://www.ehow.com/info_7798153_difference-between-pikelets-pancakes.html

But that's also how I remember them.

Having said all of that, the recipe here is the same one I use to make pancakes for my kids so yep, its confusing world...http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/5757/pikelets

When I was a kid, we always made pikelets with sour milk. That is, milk mixed with vinegar.

In other respects, the recipe was pretty identical to a pancake recipe (although the proportions were different, creating a thicker batter).

Pancakes, large (frying pan size) and thin. Pikelets, small and risen a bit.
I had assumed one of the differences was plain flour in pancakes and self-raising (or adding baking powder) for pikelets. It turns out that's wrong. Its just a thicker batter that allows pikelets to not spread out like pancakes.

Now, what is the difference between a pancake and a crepe? Is just that being French, crepe sounds classier and sophisticated?

Crepes are a thinner batter again, with more egg in the batter, cooked in a little oil. Actually prefer crepes, but wouldn't say no to any!

Mancakes are where it's at:

I would LOVE to do a f*cking road trip with Adam Richman. Beer and nuclear-powered buffalo wings for brekkie. I would pledge to only eat food that the mere sight of would raise your 'bad' cholesterol count by a thousand percent or more and, while shitfaced, go round supermarkets heckling every conscientious moron who spends five minutes checking that fat count and protein/carb intake on each individual item that they buy.

Then pelt them with empties at the checkout.
