G'Day All. Wondering if somebody here can tell me if Freo and Port Adelaide still play for the Docklands Trophy. If the answer's no, anybody have any idea when it was last awarded?

I have never heard of it.Maybe you have it confused with something else.
The only thing we play for other than the premiership cup is the derby.
Maybe someone else can enlighten us.

Not confused, just curious ;)

It started in 1995 when Freo (AFL) played a practice match against Port Adelaide Magpies (SANFL). They played another practice match in 1996 then the award continued when Port joined the AFL in 1997.

The trophy was a giant anchor if I remember correctly

I'm not a fan of these irrelevant trophy games that seem to multiply year after year.

How else are the AFL going to get people to watch nothing games :P

Every game against st kilda should be called the Siren-Lyon cup

Could call the GWS v Suns game the " who gives a shit ? " cup.

They could present the winner with a gold plated piece of dog turd.

No, we also back in the early days had a game with Essendon which was dubbed the Albert Thurgood challenge.

Spot on, didn't know they'd also scrapped that one though!

I swear that 'trophy' lasted all of one preseason game.

They made a big deal about it in our first ever praccy game against the Bombers in 95 and then I never heard of it again.

I've a vague recollection of a cannon being fired before the game, reckon it lasted until 96.

I think the Port v Freo game/trophy may have even started before Port even entered the AFL and I think there SANFL team might have beat us first up.

It died because Freo's request was to play it on ANZAC day.

While Essendon were considering this very original idea, Sheedy came up with the very original idea of a regular game on Anzac day.

The trophy was a small working cannon. It was featured in the club magazine in 94 but by the time the fixtures came out.... history had been made / negotiated.

The Docklands Trophy is sitting in a display cabinet in the Port Club at Alberton Oval. Any Dockers fans in Adelaide for the weekend are welcome to make a trip down Port Road to have a gander at it. Maybe even have a meal, a drink and a punt while you're there too :)
