Does steve johnson have an opponent?

It's the standard problem with not being to execute the way we are trying to play. Our backmen run off trying to provide drive, Johnson is lazy, sits at home, we turn it over and are exposed at the back. Until out footskills and decision making improve enough this will happen frequently.

In other words his opponent has gone walkabout.

His opponent plays to the gameplan. The side turns the ball over up the ground and Johnson is made to look like a star by sitting at home, not chasing. If we could actually kick and make good decisions then we'd be ok but we can't, so we get horribly exposed in the backline.

I know we are the worse turnover side in the comp but surely someone can tag him now.

He's been beating Newman fairly easily...could well have 6-7 by now.

Most of it has been good one on one contest, Tony Shaw is taking delight in reminding us that he's just a better player than Newman.

no real shame in it, johnson is one of the very best downhill skiers in the comp, can make most opponents look ordinary when the cats are flying... In Saying that Newman needs to pay more respect to him, cant go chasing kicks when youre standing a player of his ilk

So, which is he? A downhill skier or a player that you need to pay respect to? The Cats were 2-3 before Stevie J came back in Round 6, and we all know how that worked out for us.

Well that's just it isn't it Tony?

The days he plays on a nobody he looks pretty good running off by himself all nice and classy, but almost every single time he plays on a good small forward and is forced to be accountable, he gets beaten to the tune of 5 goals.

Today he got beaten comprehensively by his man, and turned the ball over or sold his target into trouble almost as many times as Bowden did (which is really saying something).

I've got no problem with Newman, he's a good ordinary footballer, but damn I'm sick of him flying under the blame radar and being hailed as a future captain and present day champion. He's had 15+ goals kicked on him in the last three weeks and been hailed as a champion all the way. He's very much a nowhere man...not good enough, fast enough or hard enough for midfield, not good enough to play shutdown small defender when we could be blooding kids there for the same end result. People would be crucifying any other defender who got flogged the way Newman has the last three weeks...instead, because Newman disposes well on his 30m passes half a dozen times a game and displays good style in everything he does (with no regard for the end result), he gets a free pass and becomes an AA champion player in the minds of the deluded.

As I said, I'm not calling for his head or even bagging him, just wishing for a bit of reality injected into the way people rate him as some sort of top class footballer. He's average...passably good at best. I'd have traded him in a heartbeat for Jason Torney and the draft picks we spent on Johnson back.

hes a downhill skier u need to watch otherwise he will tear u a new one. type of playr that can make the margin 5-7 goals more than it would have been. not questioning his brilliance, just that if geelong werent firing, johnson isnt the player id fear, when ur flying hes the type to give opposition supporters nightmares..

fair points on all. newman used to be one of my fav players when he first came onto the scene, heaps of courage and had hopes hed fill a role ie: hard small man in defence. but for yrs now hes shown he cant shutdown the opposituions best small/med fwd which is dissapointing and fwiw i agree with you in that he doesnt have enough hurt factor with his drive and rebound to counteract that deficiency to get the accolades he does from supporters.

Casserly will be alot like Newman coming of HBF. Will have excellent skills but will lack the defensive capacity.

I think its more important then ever to move Newman into the midfield and keep McGuane back in defense and leave defending to defenders
