Gutted for the team. Gutted for this bloke.

Whilst some have doubted his importance to this team over many years, he has been an absolute bleeder for our Guernsey. The underrated impact he has had in steadying our backline and team structure has been grossly easy to overlook for some. Some of his cut off spoils over the years have been team lifting and game winning.

Well done on an great career.. true team man with enormous ticker.

Hope I'm still around to watch young Max Doughty ripping the AFL up in 2031....
According to an article in today's paper Dogga is moving on to a career in player management in November with "Elite Sports Properties", all the best Dogga, just make sure you steer a few towards the AFC mate!! :thumbsu:

CROWS defender Michael Doughty walked into the MCG change rooms on Saturday night for the last time as an AFL player with a loud roar of frustration.
And then there was silence.
But today, life goes on - in a new direction and one not totally removed from Australian football.
With the support of wife Sara and son Max, Doughty will move from the field to an office as a player manager.
He will join international group Elite Sports Properties in November. And he will return to the MCG to watch his dream live on through a new generation of AFL players.
"That's my passion - helping young people through the system," says Doughty.

While he leaves the AFL without a premiership, Doughty carries league-wide respect for never falling short in his commitment to chasing that dream during his career.
"I want to leave with people saying I got the most out of what I was given - and that I worked hard at that," said Doughty.
That uncompromising reputation will serve well the next generation of AFL players who have Doughty look after their interests.

Yes!

Will definitely miss him.

Why didn't hawthorn stay and form a guard of honour for him like other teams have done for retiring players?

We let him down in 05 and 06. Should have played in at least 1 Grand Final, even a Premiership. But we let him down back then.

Sydney didn't do it for Tarrant either.

Oh. I did not see that game due to travelling to Melbourne at the time.

I still think Hawthorn should have done a guard of honour though (however I am biased - Doughty is my favourite player, well was)

Congrats to Dogga on a good career and for getting the best out of himself. But, if his role is as important as you say, how are we going to go next year when we didn't groom a replacement for him playing his actual role at AFL level, preferring instead to pump 22 games into a 33 year old who was always very likely going to retire at the end of this year? A slide back to 14th is imminent.

Alistair Clarkson approached a group of our players after the game and it was to go and shake the hand of Michael Doughty. Nice gesture by Clarkson :thumbsu: .

Don't need a guard of honor; he's a Crows champ, not an AFL Champ (we shouldn't have done one for Melbourne either).

Retiring at the right time, and going out well - his final series was arguably the best string of matches he played this year.

A damn shame he won't get to experience a grand final; makes you realize how close, but how far, we were.

During the regular season I'd agree. Would feel out of place, and possibly not be wanted, after losing a pre-lim.

He'll get honoured next week at the GF.

Maybe not they forgot about him at the player awards night didn't they?

Great servant of our club and has made the most of himself.

Wont go down as one of the greatest players to pull on the tri colours but every club needs players like Dogga.
Hard working, tough and honest as the day is long. Give me a Dogga Doughty over a ultra talented lazy flash in the pan any day.

Good luck for the future Dogga. Just sorry you didnt get one more game.

Yeah, so instead of pushing to a prelim final and being 5 points short of a Grand Final, we should have replaced an experienced and important player to pump games into a kid who is not quite ready and we finish 14th instead -

Are you saying that you do expect us to drop down the ladder next year, given that we've failed to prepare a replacement for this most crucial and hard to fill role?

No I was making a mockery of your post -

Tell me, what exactly is the point of 'pumping games into kids' if once they get older you are ready to knife 'em regardless of output in order to pump games into the next lot of kids....?

It's nothing to do with pumping games into kids. It's about being prepared and grooming a replacement for the guy who plays a shutdown role, often on the oppositions most dangerous small forward. Regardless of output? WTF? Doughty played like a man possessed in the last few games when the end of his career was imminent, but his form at times throughout the season was downright ordinary. We missed a definite opportunity to give some exposure to one or two other guys in his role and now, short of recruiting a ready made replacement, we go into next season with little idea of whether we have a player capable of locking down on a Rioli, Ballantyne etc. type.

So tell me who you see taking Dogga's role now? And please don't suggest anything daft like Reilly.

I honestly have no idea - I have never pretended to know enough about the players to really answer a question like this -

How does one 'groom' a young player to take his spot - Should the young player be playing at the same time as Doughty, costing someone else a spot? Do they alternate games?

I mean, this problem is going to come up whether or not you knife the older player or he manages to retire on his own terms. I am not offering a solution because I don't have one, but I just find the 'pump games into the kids regardless' as a little counterproductive
