I don't see RL being called "football" any more except in TV broadcasts.

I haven't noticed a change in the use of the word, except that now bcoz the Lions are the talk of the town most ppl now have to stop & think about which "football" you're talking about if you mention it.

AFL is growing and growing in queensland and I see "football" refered as AFL in The Courier Mail.

I haven't noticed that as an obvious AFL reference.

I regard it as a major sport in Australia, NZ, SA, France (?) and England.

So do I.

That doesn't really help your argument of rugby league is known as "football". You can't have a football world cup or there'd be heaps of suing - read the article in the first post.
