Don't use e-tax

It's useless.

Filled in my brother's, and despite the fact that his income for the year was $2044, it reckons he will owe the ATO $580 in tax. Obviously I haven't lodged it.

Never had any problems with it, both doing my own & other people's returns. Uusally when doing other people's I give a rough estimate and the e-tax final sum is pretty close. No nasty surprises at all.

Yes.

Under the progressive tax system (6000 being the first 'tax free bracket') he should get all the cash back.

Don't worry, I study finance and am in the ATO Tax Help volunteer program, so I'm fully aware of the tax-free threshold.

But surely you'd think they would configure it into their software so as not to scare off people who might not be aware of the threshold, and that doesn't just mean those who earn under it.

I had a go for fun and found it 'squeaky' clean

After all, it is a very simple program.

My view, is 'DO USE ETAX' or do it the paper way. Just don't waste money on HR Block or other tax agents if your return is nothing more than a group certificate and $300 in work related expenses.

And if your taxes are complex, pay top dollar for a proffessional.
