Was in Melbourne on the weekend and happened to hear an interview on Monday night with the great Doug Wade.
Said he considered the best 8 years of his football life was at North Melbourne 3 as a player and 5 on the board. Was reluctant to cross over from Geelong at first but never regreted it and kicked 100 goals in a season and also played in a premiership side.

Was a very good interview im sure the interviewer was a North fan as well.

Spot on a4brianp. The interviewer was Geoff Poulter, who is on Mark Fine's show every week, and always hooks up a guest for the hour between 9 and 10. The last couple have had a North flavour, and yes, Poulter is a roo man.

I liked Wade's explanation of why he came over. Ron Joseph opened a brown envelope and threw $20,000 worth of $20 notes on the table. Wade had just paid $20k for a new house, which included a $17,000 mortgage. He said it was pretty easy to make the move from sleepy hollow after that!

Remember that Wade was not a professional footballer in 1972. His $20,000 home was just shy of the median house price in Sydney for that year of $23,000. Can't find the figure for Melbourne (or Geelong for that matter) but it is fair to assume that Wade's $20K would have bought an average home.

So given 2008 house price comparisons, that's the equivalent of dropping half a mill on your coffee table. That wouldn't impress Brendan Fevola, but again, Wade was not a professional and would have been paid peanuts.

The rest of the story, as far as I recall it being told, was that he took that offer back to Geelong, where he was told they could only come up with about half as much. It was a tough decision for him still, but as written, I don't think there were too many regrets once he got into the NMFC.
