Port Adelaide swingman Dougal Howard will join the red, white and black after a deal between the St Kilda and Port Adelaide Football Clubs was reached earlier today.

Howard was part of a trade that saw teammate Paddy Ryder, pick No. 10 and a future fourth-round pick come to Moorabbin.

St Kilda handed over picks No. 12, 18 and a future third-round selection in exchange.

The highly-rated Howard joins St Kilda after 43 games for the Power, where he emerged as a promising key position talent.

The 199cm utility made his debut in 2016 before a knee injury sidelined him for the majority of the 2017 season.

After a break-out 2018 campaign playing predominantly as a key defender, Howard was given a leadership role in 2019 which saw him captain the Power in Round 9.

Head of List Management James Gallagher said Howard could become one of the club’s key pillars for years to come.

“Dougal is a serious talent and it’s exciting to bring in a player of his quality,” Gallagher said.

He has already proved he can mix it with the best as both a key defender and a forward, but we see him as player who is only going to get better
"He has great agility and speed for a guy of that size, and he’s also a young leader – we expect to continue to develop that facet of his game under the likes of Jarryd Roughead and Billy Slater.

“At 23, Dougal will join a host of guys at the same stage of their careers.”

Howard said he was excited to wear the red, white and black.

“It’s a great time to be joining the Saints,” Howard said.

“They have a lot of talented young players coming through together, and I’m looking forward to being a part of that.

“I loved my time at Port Adelaide, but I’m looking forward to the next stage of my career.”

Howard was originally selected with pick No. 56 in the 2014 National Draft.

He only has 45 games to his name, but the excitement around Dougal Howard is off the charts.

The Port swingman boasts incredible versatility and leadership at just 23 years old; his standing at Alberton reflected when he served as stand-in captain for one game in 2019.

Strong in the air and only improving with age, the key position talent looks to command the Saints’ defence for years to come.

DOUUUUUUUUUUUUGSSSSSSSS

Good man. Hopefully he and Ryder's healthy hatred of the Crows helped your mob get over the line last week.

Good news for Dougal this week is that 'booooooo' sounds pretty much identical to 'Dooooooogs', so if the natives give him some stick he can just pretend we're still cheering for him.

Two votes go to Dougal Howard, whose superb efforts in defence were equally influential in the Saints taking home the four points.

The 24-year-old fired up against Adelaide key forward Taylor Walker, notching up 16 disposals, nine spoils, seven intercepts and a stunning goal against the Crows.

Howard was dealt the short straw on a handful of occasions down in defence, but weathered the storm and opposition pressure to come out on top by the final siren.

His highlight of the night came in the second quarter, with a deft drop-step around David Mackay and running goal from outside 50 putting the 200cm talent on the board for the first time in his new colours.

A Brief History of Dougs

A young ruck-forward with speed and reach, he plied his tried in Wagga Wagga and was signed to the GWS academy. He was drafted with pick 56 in the 2014 national draft by a different club. He spent his first year developing in the SANFL before getting a crack in 2016. He played six games before an ACL injury cut short his season. He played in multiple positions, primarily forward but also being thrown into the ruck and down back.

He managed four on the comeback trail next year but really distinguished himself in 2018, missing only two games with a broken hand. He solidified himself as a CHB capable of playing team defence and tight lockdown roles. He was rewarded with a three year contract extension. In 2019 he stood in as captain but found himself once again being used to plug gaps rather than lock down a spot. Post-season discussions informed him this would continue and he was free to explore his trade options. Funnily enough clubs started leaping at the opportunity to get an exciting emerging ~2 metre tall defender and the Saints secured his services.

The Saints fleeced the Power at the trade table and walked away with my boy and Paddy Ryder and pick 10! Some reactions:

Pushes out Howard and moves down from the top 10 in the draft. Only this ****ing club.

Absolutely gutted. Massive fan favourite and we didn't even get overs for him. We just shoved him out the door for nothing. What garbage management.

Port are now known are hilariously bad traders.

Dougal was a contracted young kpp who saints were deep into. We should have come out this looking very rosy.

Now there is massive massive pressure on our drafting team to absolutely nail pick 18. Which is monumentally insane

Not too mention our tall kpp spine of players over 194cms and under 28 is Todd Marshall and Riley Grundy. That’s hilariously bad.

Plus who could forget

He's got pace, he's got leader written all over him, the anchor of our backline in 2020, Dougal Howard.

St Kilda must improve on its drought-breaking Season 2020 to earn a pass mark, according to Dougal Howard.

The key defender, who finished his first year at the club with a third-placed finish at the Trevor Barker Award, says the Saints are hungry to build upon last year's positive foundations.

A reduction in interchange rotations and a return to 20-minute quarters will greatly benefit Bradley Hill in 2021, according to key defender Dougal Howard.

Interchange rotations will drop from 90 to 75 as one of several rule changes implemented by the AFL for the coming season.

While Howard says he'll be "lucky to get a rotation" as a key defender in the revised format, his hard-running teammate is set to thrive in the new conditions.

Think my man will be right that the new man on the mark rule (if it actually gets enforced) will be a complete schemozzle.

Howard continues to go from strength to strength. Played well again against GWS in the first real game of the season . Amazed we got him for so little .

Had a great battle with the Eagles Kennedy . Kept him to not many goals which was a great effort . Really controls our backline set ups . Has become a leader of the defensive unit .

Vs. West Coast (round 4)

Doogs had plenty to keep him busy - Carlisle played forward so he was the tallest back up against a forward line rotating Kennedy, Allen and Darling. 4 clangers from 11 touches isn't a great stat, especially considering he regularly had the responsibility for kicking in. On the plus side he competed strongly, Kennedy finished with 2.2 which is a fine effort considering the service he was getting for the first two and a half quarters. Pulled down a key mark at the top of the 50 in the last quarter.

Dougal played well against GC even though Ben King kicked 3 goals on him he kept Ben King to just 5 kicks and 4 handpasses. Dougal had 17 disposals at 100% DE . One of the few players to seemed to have not struggled with what looked like perfect conditions but obviously was not as good as it looked .
