I have recently purchased a laptop with wireless broadband, my usage limit is 1GB per month. I was wondering if someone could give me a rough idea of how many hours of net surfing i might get from IGB??

My typical usage will involve news websites and sports forums much like this one... I know that this may be difficult to measure but based on my usage patterns how many hours i am likely to get for 1GB???

Cheers guys..

Ah 1GB is plenty mate if your just going to be using forums like this and the likes.... However, if you start using youtube everyday and the likes....

I'm no net usage expert but i'd bet my last penny you won't go over if your just going to be reading articles on news websites etc

avoid the afl site, it is very heavy, and avoid video streaming. Needless to say avoid bittorrents and the like. You should be fine if you don't want to go anywhere too intersting. Watch out for the excess to, alot of companies charge $150 por more per GB, which is pure gouging.

Thanks a lot for your help guys. Gives me a rough idea, i guess i will just need to monitor my usage during the month and get a feel for things.

Keep an eye on email as well. Nowadays people think nothing about sending pointless large file attachments.

An extremely valid point.

You have to be really careful with a 1Gb limit.

I would even remove displaying pictures in BigFooty. Some of the pics people post in here are 1Mb each. Doesnt sound like much but you view 10 pics and that is 1% of your limit gone.

So to summarise:

* Don't view any website associated directly with the AFL (www.afl.com.au www.westernbulldogs.com.au)

* Probably a good idea to disable flash via your Internet options.

* Limited use of youtube.

* Most importantly. Browse as you normally would for 1 week and then check how much you have used. If it looks like you will go over, make some changes. Do this every week for the 1st month. If you are really struggling to stay under upgrade to 3Gb

Once again, thanks very much guys - all very useful tips that i would have otherwise not have thought of.... :thumbsu::thumbsu:

If you use Firefox, there is a great add-in called netusage http://netusage.iau5.com/

Providing your ISP is listed in it, it shows you everytime you open up Firefox how much you have used.

I use it religiously :)

1 gig a month limit on downloads?

With broadband?

Can't be serious.

You can't have broadband and use 1 gig on the net and do serious surfing.

I have 20 gig per month daytime and 40 gig per month night with iinet and sometimes still end up getting capped.

Hands are tied a bit here in Tassie - Telstra BigPond are predominantly the main ISP for wireless broadband... Just learned that they have a number of 'unmetered sites'. Of these sites afl.com.au and each of the 16 AFL clubs are included which is good news!
