Kazaa and kazaalite are very quickly dieing. What's the latest method of downloading music? Are free mp3's a thing of the past?

Soulseek seems to be tailing off a bit too. ODC is the way to go.

Ive never used kazza as I picked up a virus d/l the program in the 1st place.

been using WinMX for a cpl of years now and havent had a problem.

I formatted my pc not long ago so haven't used kazaa for a while so what has happened? Why is Kazaa dieing?

The americans are getting scared and aren't sharing much anymore and also they are editing the files so that the songs are no longer on them.

What's ODC?

And i thought winMX was run in conjunction with kazaa?

MP3's were free in the same way that walking into a record store and shoplifting a CD is free.

not really... cds are cds...

mp3's are a compressed, lossy file format that is nowhere near cd-quality... :I

Everytime I used Kazaa my computer always ended up getting a virus and crashing. I would always have to format my comp 2months after installing it. These days I use Ares, works alright and has a fair bit of stuff on there. I hear Limewire works alright as well? I used winMX years ago but found I could never get what I wanted. Even the most common songs had cues of 100 or for some reason just would not start to download?

It depends on how much they've been compressed, and what their sample-rate is. You can certainly make CD quality MP3's, although most people seem to be happy trading off sound quality in return for a quick download.

When you buy a CD, you aren't paying for the plastic, you're effectively purchasing a licence to listen the music contained on it. So in theory if you fork out for an album, it would be then be legal for you to download tracks contained on that album via Kazaa or whatever.

That being said, I have nothing against MP3 file sharing as it's a useful medium for new artists, and it levels out the playing field somewhat.

Well, Kazaa was a whole lotta ******** on my computer - it didn't work and probably gave us viruses - so my dad got a program called LimeWire.

You have to pay for LimeWire, but it is the best one I've ever seen. It's brilliant! I reccommend it to everyone.

Not all MP3's are bad - some are quite compressed that they're really bad quality but most I've downloaded are fantastic in their quality.

Without programs like Kazaa/LimeWire, I would never have found the songs I have now. Some techno/dance songs (i love that genre) are so rare, you'd have to go overseas to get the actual single CD.

It's just record companies sooking over their loss of profits - it's actually not as big a loss to the artists as they'd have you believe.

As if the artists get a huge amount of money from the recorded product anyway. Record companies are worried about people realising they are kind of redundant, nothing but vampires sucking the flesh from the bones of creative people.

Freely available mp3s means more exposure for the artist. I don't download a lot of mp3s - simply because most of the stuff I want to hear is hard to find. But it's good that often when I want to hear something I am able to without buying it.

I don't think it's really all that different to listening to the album in a music store then deciding if you want to buy. The vast majority of people downloading a song are never going to sell it or make any use of it other than playing at a party. Which would technically be illegal if you played the original CD anyway, or so I understand. So the onus is on the musicians to make stuff that people want to hear, in whatever genre it might be. Cutting out the record companies might reduce the amount of manufactured music clogging the charts.
