Hi everyone,

A quick question for people who have watched Petrie play.

Does he have the mobility/agility/speed to play a key position, other than Ruck?

As has been pointed out here on the forum, Porter/Burton may seriously slow Drew's footy development!!

Secondly, how do you think Watt would go as a third tall forward marking option?

Cheers

Go ROOS!!!!

Petrie:
He is border line. Suspect agility, can take pack marks and scraps well on the ground.
Could play in Essendons forward line ala Steve Alessio.
No room for him alonside Carey/Rocca.

Watt:
I don't think I've seen him play up forward. He does look better when he attacks the footy rather having to worrying about an opponent and I think he played his junior years up forward, could be wrong.

Worth a try I think.

Re: Petrie (my 2 cents)

I'm not sure that Petrie could be used anywhere other than in the ruck. He doesn't really have the mobility to be a leading forward or backman.
He is strong, however, & can take a good pack mark and is actually quite good at ground level.
He also seems to be a pretty natural ruckman in that he knows where to run and position himself around the ground and also in the ruck contests.
Inexperience and lack of bulk are his major short falling at this stage.

At this stage I'd expect him to be third choice as ruck, however Burton will retire in a year or two, I'd expect Petrie to fill his shoes.
He can play though, so I wouldn't be afraid to throw him in if an injury occurred to Porter/Burton.
He played one ripper game for us early last year when we were beaten by the Tigers.

totally agree , i think what they are planning is this will be burtons last year and petrie will have 2 years under his belt with the muzzies , and slot in as porters no.2

Pretty good summary, agree will all points so far... but what happens if Spider's form this year is a continuation of his excellent 2001 & pre-season 2002 form? Will he be expected to retire on a high, or would an extra year be warranted?

Given that Spider was a late starter to AFL football (debut at 25), and his style of play doesn't lead to physical batterings that Carey/Brereton etc. have to endure, what's to say he can't play beyond the age of 32 if the form is good? Basically agree with the idea that this is his last year and that the Porter/Petrie combination is the plan for 2003, but it just never seems to be considered that Burton could play on.

Petrie is very much in the Porter mould I think, or if you look at other clubs, probably Matthew Allan or Shaun Rehn. Doesn't show huge amounts of agility, pace or athleticism, but contests hard, has good skills, and seems footy smart. Does quite well around the ground by way of consistency for 100 minutes, rather than flashy patches of play.

I think Petrie will, in the long term, be capable of filling in for the odd game or quarter in positions other than the ruck, but any permanent move would seem odd.

What role is to be expected from David Hale then??? Will he be able to be used like Corey was as a roaming forward???

I would say so. It will probably take 3 years for him to fill out a bit, because he is all skin and bone at the moment. Perhaps when he fills out a little, it might be easier to define a role for him... possibly depending on whether the added weight & strength will affect mobility and pace.

You'll probably recall his game up forward again essenscum last year. Did a solid job and was probably our number 3 forward that day behind rocca and mckernan.

And yes Watt did play a lot of his junior days up forward if i recall correctly

The only thing I recall is Watt (and McCartney) getting towelled up by Lloyd who kicked 9!

after seeing him play for broadbeach last year , it seems to me north will play him like richmond play ottens , there both the same height and agile

for broadbeach he mainly played in the forward line , always taking strong grabs

BACK TO DREWWWWWWWW!!!!!!
I think he has what it takes to make a regular senior spot in the roos team,I'd hate to see him play for essendon, he not only has the playing ability but the personality, seems so sweet and polite, always nice to me,

by the way on the topic of a/s/l
lets just say I wore hotpants to a certain practice match if anyone remembers the sandringham one.

Yeah 9 goals from 9 kicks as I recall and then the following week ,against the Lions, Bradshaw and Notting have 10 kicks between them for 10 goals! 19 kicks for 19 goals from 3 players over 2 successive games. I think you know you're outa luck when that happens!

I thought I read a post saying that wasn't you. In order to clear this up for everyone, I'm offering (free of charge) to do a close-up hot pants inspection of all female Kangaroos fans between the ages of 16 and 19.

Let's get to the bottom of this! (pun intended)

The only thing I remember is predicting Essendon had buckleys of winning the flag after that game... and all those bomber fools laughed... Haa

From what I've heard, Drew is hoping to explore opportunities down back this season.
He knows if he is going to last at North he is going to have to develop beyond ruck and I really think he will shine this year.

:)
