dumping radioactive waste

the federal government has named a site in northern South Australia, 20km east of Woomera, as a dumping ground for low level radioactive waste.

is there a better alternative place to be dumping the stuff? perhaps a bit closer to adelaide maybe?? or even 20km's to the west??

I don't think anyone wants that crap in their own state. Aren't those refugees still in Womera? Maybe they can dump it nearer to there.

Nothing wrong with dumping it in SA, doesn't bother me, in fact it would be a great opportunity for SA to wrangle a deal with the other states to get something we want (like extra guaranteed water supply from the Murray) for basically accepting low level radioactive waste which is less damaging to the environment than the exhaust fumes from the trucks that will transport the waste.

Why is there such an outrage of a 'not in our backyard' attitude? It has to go somewhere

Can't believe I'm saying this, but you have made some very good points Zombie. I have no problems accepting low-level waste, as it is safer than being stored in hospitals, etc (particularly when we had a fire bug trying to burn down the RAH!) However, we should accept it on the basis that another state stores the proposed new medium-level waste to ensure we don't become known as a "nuclear" state.

Yeah, I really can't understand why people are so worried about having the low-level nuclear waste dump in their state. Just amazes me that so many people when they hear the word "nuclear" they immediately think of nuclear bombs & things like that! The waste has to go somewhere, it can't just keep building up in the hospital. It's not a matter of it not being safe in the hospital, just that the waste would keep building up......

Heck, I reckon it's a damn good idea. Why stop with the Eastern States' waste - why not charge the septics, koreans, etc an absolute fortune to bury their waste? Just make sure its a few hundred kilometres away from the Goyder line.

I don’t really care if we get a low-level radioactive waste dump here in SA. However, it is not our waste. If I am correct this waste comes from the Lucas Heights nuclear facility in NSW, and this facility does not benefit us in any way. For this reason, if we are to store it, NSW (or whoever is responsible) should have to pay the SA government and the land owner, a fu@kload of money. Otherwise they can keep it in NSW!

Doesn't benefit you in any way??? Are you a complete moron? Do you know where all the hospitals in Australia get their radiactive isotopes from for Nuclear Medicine? LUCAS HEIGHTS!!! Yes that's right.....but hey, since you say that Lucas Heights doesn't benefit you in any way, just remember that in the future if you ever need a lung scan to see if you've got a blood clot in your lungs or you ever need a bone scan or any other sort of scan that involves radioactive isotopes.

LOL Tell be about it! I work in Nuclear Medicine so it really really gets on my nerves when people say all this crap about nuclear stuff & Lucas Height. I wish stupid people like Vindor would just do a bit of research before making stupid statements like that!
