I deleted a few surplus programs and since then I have not been able to access either my DVD or CD drives, says they are not accesible.

Which programs?
You haven't ********ed about with the insides at the same time?
Are you on XP? Try system restore to go back to before you un-installed the programs...then un-install one at a time...

The programs were things like Hero DVD player, which has been reinstalled, Norton anti virus, I basically did a clean out of stuff which was surplus to my needs.
I have had a major problem with (as I found out) media player which constantly caused my system to crash, by uninstalling that back to ver 6.4 I no longer have the crashing problem , but now I cannot access my drives.
In my device manager I have an exclamation mark next to CD rom controllers.
I have w98 as my os, and i have never had this problem of unable to access my cd rom or dvd before.

Do you have any of the original CD's that came with your DVD player??

Sounds like you need to re-install the drivers for the DVD. The DVD program must have inadvertantly removed them.

If you're on 98 I would assume you have an old PC but a new-ish DVD player...

I have original disks which came with the DVD player. I have a Duron 800 1.2 gig HD 128 meg of ram, Lg cd rom and dvd players.
I have gotten the cd rom to work, simply by removing it and then letting Windows find it, but I cannot do the same with the DVD player, I realise i need to load the driver but the msg I get is that it is loaded, and when i try to use it the msg is drive not accesable.

In Device Manager is your DVD drive showing up at all?

It is showing up as CD ROM, and when I double click it, it shows both.

This is in Windows XP but should be very similar

right click on the DVD drive in Device Manger, and choose properties. Under Device Usage make sure it is on Use this Device (enabled), if isn't change it, probably need to reboot, so do so. Now if that still doesn't work, then go back to the DVD drive properties and click Driver, try to uninstall it, probably have to reboot, then try reinstalling it again.

No can do feher there is nothing like that at all.
I am currently searching through other tech forums and have found one which seems quite a few ppl have got a similar problem, it might (stress might) have something to do with uninstalling Nero, which was one of the progs I removed, will try and reinstall it.

Not sure where they are to be frank, MM, device manager recognises my DVD and tells me the drivers are up to date, it also says that no drivers are needed, I have run update drivers within system properties, I must've run it 20 times, it tells me I have the updated driver, I have removed both drives and they have been reinstalled by windows, I have reinstalled Nero and still no diff, I have changed the DVD from master to slave, i have run it alone, I have searched other tech forums and have found other ppl with the similar problem and as yet no remedy, my last resort will be return to dealer and see if he can get it to run, thanx for all the help at least i am learning heaps about my pc.

good luck jozeph seeing you are a north supporter you will understand my blocking all from the yr 98 out of memory including windows98;)
