I'm a techno bimbo and basically all I want is a standard DVD player, no high tech latest features crap just a regular DVD player.
Does anyone know roughly how much it will set me back and where I can find one?
Any help is really appreciated,
thanks!

As in a standalone player that you plug into your TV, or a DVD drive for your computer?

a standalone player can cost you anywhere from $150 to $name-your-price. At the lower end, you lose some features, but if you don't have a $3000 telly, surround sound system and aren't picky about the quality being absolutely spot on, then you can probably make do with those cheaper players - they all play DVDs in pretty much the same way.

$200-300 will get you something pretty decent. Where to get one? **** Smith, Tandy etc, all those electronics stores will have good value budget models. You'll pay a bit more at department stores etc. Only buy from specialist audio/home theatre places if you're after a top-end model.
