For a couple of years we have been hearing Richmond only have 4 elite players - those who would 'get a game in any side'.

I now reckon we have 5. Grimes is so good at what he does. He plays on blokes like Greene and Betts. He also plays on guys well over 6 foot - if Jenkins had started playing well on the weekend, we would have shifted Grimes on to him. He is a great 3rd man up defender - if he's in the contest, no-one is going to mark it. He doesn't make mistakes. He very rarely loses a 1-on-1 (I know a defender only has to draw). Toby Greene had been held goal-less twice this year - against Carlton, where he kicked 5 behinds, and against us in the finals. He's like a black hole - if the opposition kick the ball in his direction, it disappears.
Grimes didn't make the All-Australian team - the 6 defenders they picked were 3 KPFs (fair enough) and 3 rebounders = Hibberd, Docherty and Laird. OK, they're all fine players - but the good small forwards would have them for breakfast. Grimes doesn't rebound because that's not his job - Ellis, Houli, Vlastuin and Rance do that.

And now Grimes has stood up and done it in the finals.

I'm not posting this on the main board because I don't want to have the usual flaming by 'experts' and told which of their players are better. I just reckon he is an extremely under-rated player and, at what he does - he's at least as good as anyone in the league. And if he was available, every side would pick him.
 
In relation to Grant Thomas' question about 'Martin, Cotchin, Rance, Reiwoldt, then who' I reckon Grimes, Vlaustin, Prestia and Edwards are a pretty solid group of next best. Grimes and Vlaustin especially aren't far off A grade and Prestia after a slow start to the season showed his goods in the latter part and the finals, while Edwards had a poor 2016 season but his 2015 and 2017 seasons were pretty bloody good. :tigerface:

And if Astbury backs up this season he will be in there as well. Took the key forward most weeks and rarely beaten. :)

Grimes is a gun. Just rarely ever gets beaten. Tough and hates losing.
 
Good thread. Outstanding season. Astbury as well.

Shitted me all year the lack of BF votes both of them got during the year game by game. Easy to give votes to the likes of Dusty Dog, Chimpa etc. but these 2 blokes were fantastic all year long.

They were instrumental again on GF day shutting down the most vaunted fwd line in the comp.
 
I like how excited he gets when a teammate does a simple thing like a smother or a spoil- he comes in and gets around them big time.
Is a real solid citizen and how can you not like someone who owns a winery! :wineglass:
 
Didn't he go nine games or something like that without an opponent kicking a goal,
I remember some crazy stat.
Get his face smashed against st kinda and pretty sure he kicked the goal...

The media might undersell him, but you can be sure the opposition players know who he is when he shakes their hand before a game and says
"Hi, I'm Optimus Grimes, you're dead MFR"

Totally agree, he's become critical to our structure and culture. Part of the reason he's so underrated might be that he's an unfashionable type of player - not heavily gym-muscled, rarely required to go on long rebounding runs, doesn't have a memorable hair cut, but he hits the contest hard and is very rarely beaten 1-on-1. I reckon he's the sort of rangey defender that might have been more common 60 or 70 years ago.

Even with a premiership medal round his neck and a shut down job on betts, Greene and the like, opposition clubs and fans alike continue to underrate him. May that continue too.

Grimes is gonna getcha!
