I know he's still pretty skinny but does anyone see a senior selection for him in the not to distant future?

He's also been injured for the past 4-5 weeks with an eye issue.

Returned to Coburg reserves last week I believe.

Hopefully he can work his way up to the seniors and we can get a couple of games into him. It's not outside of his scope for this year.

Is Harley Bennel Jamie's brother? If so we could each end up with a Morton, a Grimes and a Bennel.

he had an eye injury which he's just gotten over, but as part of his recovery he had to take a kind of steroid to strengthen the tissue or something, which means he can't play for a certain amount of weeks, I think 6-9 from memory :thumbsu:

i like the look of young Dylan, got very good pace, very good height, just needs to build his strength up. Needs to break into the Coburg 1st's also, but only a matter of time until he's playing for the Tigers

for many young players, a decent stint in the VFL does wonders for their development as physically they just aint ready..TV will appreciate being back in his weight div....No need for Grimes to get a call up...we are ok with tall defenders with astbury having a run there and soon Goo will have a shot...leave Grimesy in VFL for balance of year

I think Dylan will get at least 1 game this year, but probably not until the last few rounds. Everyone possible will get a go this year.

Pity about the eye injury he has had, we may have seen him in contention earlier if it wasnt for that.

i reckon hes got a bit to work with. injury has not helped his cause but played some good footy early. fully expect him to get games if not this yr for certain next.

both westhoff & grimes need to put on about 15 kgs before they are anywhere near ready for serious afl action................which means 2012
i have only seen grimes on highlights reel, but club site lists him at 193cm and 82kg. Astbury - 81kg and 2 cm taller has already played 6 or so games. I know we can't place too much faith in these "official" weights/heights, but if Astbury is taller and lighter doesn't that also make him skinnier? Others of similar height like Post 1cm taller and McGuane 2cm shorter are 88kg and 86kg respectively. I'd have thought that Grimes at his height should aim to get to around 92kg say like Harry Taylor at Cats who is listed as same height but 5 years older. I would not be surprised to see him play seniors in back end third of season, subject to solid form at Coburg.

i dont know about their listed heights & weights but would imagine these stats would be when they first walk through the punt road doors.

i have stood next to grimes & astbury at cragiburn ground astbury still needs wieght on him as well as does post ideally 10kgs plus

grimes looks very very skinny in real life and would get out bodied by most fowards where players like astbury playing foward makes his own play & gets into position to avoid body on body contact

grimes being a defender has to creat the body contact and would simply get thrown around like a rag doll

grimes , astbury , post , reiwoldt , griffiths ,vickery ,westhoff, browne
all need big summer in the gym 8kgs each should be a minimum they aim for.

How much bigger do you want Browne? I'd like him to be able to jump in the ruck, thanks. :D

I also don't agree that Grimes needs a huge amount of muscle immediately to weigh him down, 3-4 kilos over the off season and then another 3-4 the next would be just fine as he shouldn't be looked at as a gorilla KPP and instead a tall running defender. If he was 84-86 kilos by the start of next year that would be good weight to continue building on.

The Griff doesn't need 8 more kilograms on him in one season. Just keep doing what he's doing is fine for a kid that is already nearing 100kgs at 18 years of age.

Post is already clearly on the way to filling out and there is no need to rush it beyond a reasonable program that he can continue to adapt his fitness to his weight.

Astbury is the one that needs the most building on but I'd be wary of stacking 8 kilos minimum on him from his weight from now to round 1 next year. That's a massive gain of weight in a short time for a player to contend with. Maybe not for an amateur but for AFL players who also have to be elite athletes it would have a less than optimal effect imo.

It's not I don't agree we need to build these kids but I want to build these kids muscles in a sustained way that they lose their speed and leap and forgetting what else makes them players for the future.

We want to build these kids muscles but not so much that they lose their speed and leap in the mean time.
browne is around 204cm & griff 200cm
in regards to browne the kid is big but not muscle big..............stand next to him and look at his arms & legs definately needs muscle.
sandilands is something like 124kgs !!

griffiths is similar as well............ dont just look at stats and try to make a judgment ...... mathew kreuzer is just about where he needs to be & griffiths is about the same frame.

by your post them are you saying that both browne & griff are exactly where we want them to stay !!

The Griff could do with an pre-season where he smashes the training, loses 2 kgs of weight he doesn't need with aerobic training, and gains 3-4kgs in the gym to be around 100kgs and that's just fine and he is all the better for it. Yes Kruezer may be an exmple of where the Griff is heading but he's had two full years ahead of the Griff to get that frame so let's not put it all on Griffiths to try and do it all over one summer.

And how long did it take Sandi to get to 124 kgs? Browne is ~105kgs, if he keeps getting fitter and works hard in the gym it's highly possible he'll remain near 105kgs and still be all the better for it. 4 kgs of added muscle and 4 kgs off of other matter would be a mighty fine result for a net result of zero added kilos but still a more than adequate 105 kgs and a better framed AFL player as a 20 year old. And regardless Sandi is a physical beast and the exception to the rule, Browne's main issue is that he is already reasonably slow. Let's not compare apples with Oranges and suggest he needs and can be an AFL player at 124 kgs when most premier ruckman do so between 100-110 kgs.

Do you see what I'm getting at?

by your post them are you saying that both browne & griff are exactly where we want them to stay !!

Wow, well comprehended. I'll say it again.

We want to build these kids muscles but not so much that we stack 8kgs on them in one season they lose their speed and leap in the mean time that mean just as much to their game as their weight going forward.

Kreuzer is a good comparison for Griffo. Was around 200 and 100 when he started too, but looked skinny. Now he's filled out and much more muscularly defined, but still 200 and 100. It's just muscle development in accordance with loss of puppy fat. Therefore exact figures aren't really what we should be looking at. If Griff can follow this path he'll be looking the goods.

Jeez, talk about impatient!! Every player you have listed bar Reiwoldt (21) and Post (20) are still teenagers. Yeah they all need to bulk up, but they will as they get into their early 20s regardless of the training they do.

Agree with PHX here, we just need a well structured strength and conditioning program and they will develop into the size and type of athlete they need to be naturally over the next 3-4 years, whether thats 10kg more all muscle, or 4 kg heavier but a lot leaner. Whatevers required.

The main problem with what you're saying is that all of them at their age (bar Reiwoldt and probably Post) would still be growing and to do the kind of strength work required to put on 8kg in 6-8 months would definitely do more harm than good.

Reiwoldt is already showing that his strength is increasing, and we'll see him with an extra 4 or so kg by the start of next year and will prob settle around the 100kg mark in 3-4 years. (Nick who??:D)

We've got to be patient! The most promising thing is that most of the new batch can actually play, and getting them up to a decent size will just be the finishing touches to what is looking like a quality group.

OMG where did i say they had to do it in the next 6 months ffs ??
firstly muscle is heavier than fat so these boys will gain weight no matter what. browne in 2 years time will weigh at least 5-8 kgs more than he does know.

some people must never of seen some of these kids in person, astbury, griff, post, browne, grimes, westhoff dont have that much fat to lose they can only gain muscle !!

there was a post above about kruezer being 100kgs when he was drafted & still being 100 kgs now even though he is considerably bigger !! please

these football sites like richmonds dont update the players heights & weights kruezer is at least 5-8 kgs heavier than when he was recruited

Oh well, hope he makes the most of the roids and spends those 6-9 weeks in the gym getting ripped :p

Ummmm right here!?

The way AFL players train in the preseason means they can only effectively put on muscle mass in the off season and early preseason. Once they get to later stages of the preseason, the focus becomes much more about aerobic capacity, and to make this phase effective as possible the resistance training required to bulk up has to be tapered off to a level where the player's strength/size plateaus, which also has to be continued through the season to maintain peak aerobic fitness.

The group you mentioned even if they started now (at the cost of their aerobic fitness) could only really build muscle in the next 6 months, to be at peak fitness for round 1. So as I said in my previous post, 8kg prior to the start of the 2011 is unrealistic and highly risky for a player at any stage of their career, let alone one whose body is still growing.

Over training a young body is a bad idea full stop, ask Cotch!! :o
