This youngster's contract ran out this year, do u think CC will retain him or trade him or delist him? looks like a capable player when i seen him.

Unfortunately for Smithy, I reckon he'll be one of the first on the chopping block. CC wants to elevate 2-3 rookies, so that means 5-6 guys will have to be delisted to trim the list back to 35. Macca will likely go onto the veterans list, but it's still 5 who will need to go. I reckon Smithy would be one of them, as others have passed him by this year. Shame - as the guy always gives it 110%.

I think he'd suit the game style of the Swans, and also the smaller ground of the SCG. I hope for his sake he is picked up by another club that will give him a go.

Not the most talented player, but by gee he went in hard. Used to cringe whenever I saw him dropped, because he was exactly the sort of guy you keep in your team to set an example to the other players.
Dropping guys like Smith I felt used to let our softarse front runners like Headland, Medhurst, even Walker off the hook.

Be sad to see him get delisted, but I can't see CC keeping him.

Rob I am glad you included Walker in that list of softarse front runners, I am also of the same opinion. Has pace but is not tough enough and his disposal is suspect. IMO trade him but I think he is one of CC's untouchable love children.

We're already lacking in pace...

I'll agree that Walkers 2005 season was not up to scratch, but that was due to a long injury lay off and ordinary form on his return to the side. I've always felt his worth to the team is undervalued, let's hope he forgets about 2005 and regains his zip in 2006.

Remember how everyone was whinging and moaning when we were decimated by injuries mid-season... along the lines of, "We never realised Grandson's true worth to the team, but now he's out we all want him back in ASAP."
9 weeks out with stress fractures after 87 consecutive games is going to have an impact. There's no doubt he isn't the hardest nut going around, but sheesh... when the injured players - Grandson among them - started returning... my oh my, we started winning games.

He is a very good player in a a team with a lot of players like him and the game is changing to bigger-bodied midfielders. He is a classic rover although maybe a bit slower. I think he will be delisted and I hope may be re-drafted.

I'm not sure how we got onto Walker from Smith. Whatever you say about Walker he does have very poor disposal for a player of his longevity and while he is strong he's doesn't stick his tackles. He often seems to get caught on the wrong side of a contest. Playing him at HBF he does a very serviceable job but that's all you're going to get from him, and I think over time he'll have to improve or other players may go past him.

well i`d deffently take smith at carlton, considering dennis pagan was the one to draft him in 2000 it may be a chance, i can only hope

You gave us about pick 400 for T-Lo last year... I suppose we could expect a similar trade for young Dylan?

If anything he'd go for nothing in the pre-season draft.

Don't get me wrong, I rate Walker. I certainly wouldn't be putting him on the trade table. I just think he's one of the many players running around in the Freo jumper that play soft footy and don't want to put the hard yards in, when as far as I can see they have the ability to play a much tougher game.

And I reckon a cause of that is the example set by other players continually getting a game ahead of much tougher, less talented players willing to work their arse off. Such as Dylan Smith. And that drags players down. 2 examples from the last quarter against Port (when you would think the players would as desperate as you would ever get):

Walker getting brushed out of the way by Pickett about 5 metres out from goal in the last quarter, allowing Pickett to take the easiest of posessions and slot it through. I know Pickett is a tough mongrel, but Walker was treated like a bit of dirt on your jacket, and flicked away appropriately. It was deadset weak.

The 2nd one that stands out was Parker being totally uncompetitive in a race to the ball in the defensive goalsquare. Instead of putting his body on the line by diving on it and risking injury, he simply falls over in the contest and it costs a goal. It was a pathetic effort from a bloke who a couple of years ago I reckon would have done all he could for the team and club. I have no doubts he didn't deliberately think 'Gee, im not prepared to put my body on the line here'. But I reckon the current culture got to him.

The contradiction to that is Grover. Last year he was a prime suspect in the gutless stakes. But this year he completely turned his game around. But he's an exception rather than the rule. Too many times this year i've seen hard tough players go the pike rather than put their body on the line. And the blame for that has to lie in the hands of the coaching staff. Ultimately CC.

Which is why whoever we trade for as a 'fix' to our problems isn't going to work. The improvement needs to come from within the club and current playing group.

Agree completely. The conversion of Josh Carr from a hard in and under tough man to a outside running seagull should be proof enough of that.

I reckon we could get Jonathon Brown and he'd turn into McDougall in a year.

Pity if he is cut, this kid has a real hot go and great in the wet. IMO he has not really been given a go to really establish himself. If he is cut, I hope that he does get picked up somewhere else.

Just get "p***-off" that someone like Smithy gets cut and yet Mr Failure himself , the great so called coach is still there.

Has been told DCM

smith maybe thrown up as a sweetener in a possible trade for hay?

Just a little perspective required; Smith has already been delisted by North Melbourne, and, even with Walker out due to injury couldn't get a spot in the team. He is an ok-ordinary fringe player who will make little impact for us. Also we do actually need to delete a couple of players.
