I laughed out loud the first time I heard my mate use the term "echo holder". In retrospect, I shouldn't have as he was just using the term he grew up with. Him and my grandma are the only people I've ever heard use the term, and they are from Yorke Peninsula and Balaklava, respectively. I've come to the conclusion that this is a proper country term. I grew up on the Fluerieu and have never heard anyone from there say it, but it's no where near as "country" as Balaklava or Yorkes.

I love this kind of slang and would hate to see words like this die out. To anyone who grew up calling stubbies "echo": keep doing it. Stay true to yourself, it's what makes you different to every other person out there.

the same goes for Gaol over Jail

A mate of mine works for PIRSA, and I can confirm that they still use "gaol" over "jail".

I know a lot of people still use the term Echo, which was a SA term for stubby.

but for the life me I don't know why it would have been used...but I'll try to bring it back of course

the same goes for Gaol over Jail

Echo because they were returned for the deposit back when we were the only state to do it.

More trivia Coopers stoped refilling old washed bottles because some showed wear marks at higher class bars and dining.

Forgive my ignorance, but how is the word "echo" linked to deposits? I don't get it.
Bit of a quote from wiki

An echo can be explained as a wave that has been reflected by a discontinuity in the propagation medium, and returns with sufficient magnitude and delay to be perceived
Key word is returns ;)

I'm happy to hear the term Gaol still used, someone needs to let the media know the way Australians should be writing it.

I've noticed that the Advertiser hedge their bets and just use "prison" now. I guess it doesn't matter, they're all the same thing. It's not like America where jail and prison are two completely different things.
