Ed Clarke
Details:
Club: North Shore/NSW
DOB: 11 June 1986 Hgt: 178cm Wgt: 91kg
Position: Ruck Rover
Natural Foot: Right

Honours:
New South Wales 2003, 2004
MVP on New South Wales 2004
All Australian 2004
State Screening Camp 2004

Strengths: Clarke is a powerful centreman who is 91kg of muscle. He is one of the best performed players in underage football this year, having dominated in the under 18 carnival, gathering 10 Morrish Medal votes in 4 games, then winning the MVP in Allies v Victoria game.

He is a freak at the stoppages, just constantly wins the ball out of the centre and pumps it forward. He is also extremely dangerous in front of goal, kicking 6 in the final carnival match. Is a long kick and has clean hands. Also a good leader and strong in the hips. Tackles very hard.

Weaknesses: Clarke's body strength compared to the other kids at this level gives him a massive advantage. Probably has little scope for improvement and lacks pace. Can get the blinkers in front of goal.

Footydraft.com comment: What to do? What to do? This guy is a man playing in a kids comp, but boy can he play. His body shape is all wrong and for every Sam Mitchell there is a David Kellett or Daniel Elstone who hasn't made it. Definitely worth a rookie list at the VERY least, but I think clubs will be too wary to draft him.

I want Clarke!!!!!!!!
How good does he sound.
He's from NSW, another Lenny Hayes story.... (got away from sydney)

And become a superstar at St. Kilda!!!!!

178cm and 91kg............ thats huge!! :) Come on Sainters....what are we waiting for?? Go for Ed Clarke.

LOL....... No im not him, he lives in NSW, im a Melbourne boy through and through. I just think he will be a great asset to us in the midfield, especially because our midfielders, are ageing and we need a few replacements, for thommo, powelly etc...

I dont see why we wouldnt get him.... what is the rookie draft list order.......???????
Does everyone have a selection?

Yeah everyone does. Its just depends about spots available.
The ROos are going to select 5 rookies.- Their coach sais

Sydney and Brisbane (I think) can choose three players (NSW only) to go onto there rookie list without any other clubs having a chance of selecting them. Sydney have never used this before but it's pretty much a certainty that they will choose Shaw, Bartlett and Clarke.

Yeah.....I didnt no that. I dont care who gets him as long as he gets a chance.

Is that because they wouldn't be good enough?

More or less. Its also designed to help the Swans and the Lions get more local players onto their seniors lists therefore in time removing the need for the salary cap concessions because we don't need to go after interstate players all the time.

If the three last past the pre season draft they will more or less be on our list next season.

the point is you missed your chance for your born and breed NSW player thats could be the best playing at the moment from NSW, with hamill also from the ACT

If I read this argument one more time I think I will throw up.

No other club in the competition seems to be expected to take a local boy over any other.

Who did Collingwood draft with their top 2 picks last year? That's right, a Tasmanian and a Western Australian. What were there no local boys the club could have picked, from a state which produces over 50% of draftees?

And Port last year drafted one local boy, Symes, (in the main draft). All the rest were interstaters.

West Coast ignored all the local players to choose Butler (a South Australian) and Waters (a Victorian).

Freo took Campbell, Murphy, Mundy and Dunn (all Vics).

And yet all these clubs live in states that regularly produce a good number of quality players. How many quality local boys does NSW produce? And yet the Swans are criticised if they don't choose them.

Furthermore, I remember derision over the Swans' decision to pass over Salopek two years ago, opting for the one top-rated local boy instead.

And while we're on the subject of Salopek, if the Swans were stoopid not to draft Hayes, a Swans fan, why didn't the Saints pick Salopek, a known Saints fan, instead of Goddard.

That's right - they were "allowed" to choose the player they thought was best available.

And who else have they drafted with their raft of top 10 picks over the past few years? Goddard and Ball are the only two Vics, the rest going on two NT boys, a NS Welshman and a Tasmanian living in Queensland.

At the time of the 1998 draft the Swans used their picks on the players they believed to be the best and who they needed. If you think Hayes is a better player than Fosdike and/or Bolton fine, criticise the Swans talent spotting prowess. But don't come out with crap that they were obliged to take Hayes because he was local.

Kudos to Liz for spelling it out.

No one said that you had to take hayes, i simply said that you missed your chance, go have a cry, and on that note i will bag the swans talent spotting prowess because whoever thought of picking fosdick at 3 was an absolute moron.

You said that he helps sydney and brisbane get more local players..... you could of had hayes and hamill, but you didnt pick them up when you had the chance.... thats your fault, other clubs should not be punished by not having a free shot at picking up someone because sydney didnt pick up lenny hayes when they could of..... they got someone else.... thats their fault.

Its gives NSW players who normally wouldn't be selected at all on either a senior list or rookie list.

you could of had hayes and hamill, but you didnt pick them up when you had the chance

Yeah we could of but we didn't. Hamill as a ACT player is no big loss as we have players of a simular nature at the club who do just a good a job. Hayes yes looking back was a mistake, but at the time we made the correct decisions, because the 3 players we selected before Hayes went were deemed to be better than him, by all football judges. Heck Hayes was deemed as the 3 best NSW player of that year. So if we did select a local with one of our first 3 picks we still would of passed up on Hayes. Its easy to make judgements 6 years later, but at the time no one thought we stuffed up.

thats your fault, other clubs should not be punished by not having a free shot at picking up someone because sydney didnt pick up lenny hayes when they could of..... they got someone else.... thats their fault.

Since when is this a free shot. The 15 other clubs have two chances to pick these NSW players up before we get to select them. If we use the rule to our advantage then its the other 15 clubs fault they didn't select them when they had the chance.

Since this rule came in a few years back to replace our zone selections in the national draft, only two selections have player senior football for the Swans, James Micklejohn and Paul Bevan.

I'm not sure that some of these simpletons understand

The whole point of the rule is to give talented NSW and Qld youngsters the chance to have a go on an AFL list that they may not otherwise get.

If they are an obvious talent they will be snapped up in the draft ala Hayes, however Bevan is an example of a player who may not have been given a chance if not for this rule.

Thus there is an incentive for yougsters in these non-football strongholds to play the game. Plus it also means that the Swans and Lions don't have to incur additional costs in relocating rookies from interstate
