Just wondering what you all think of the possibilty of getting Eddie Betts in the Rookie Draft. Would you be happy or ********ed if we got him?

Won't happen. He is a specialist forward pocket and has nothing much to his game other than pace.

With Brown, Rodan, Krakouer, Tambling, Meyer, Roach, Raines, Gilmour and Foley all looking for game time in the FP it is the one position we have enough bodies for.

At 173cm he is Rodan size. His work across the HBF in junior footy was mostly lousy.

With Foley allready on the rookie list it just doesn't make sense to double up in that role. We will probably only have 2-3 rookies in total, I think it makes more sense to add a ruckman, genuine ball-winning midfielder and a key position option.

Guys that small have to be enormously talented to make the AFL. Betts is just very good, not extraordinary.

He looked good in the GF, but we've got a few like him. I wondered why he wasn't picked up in the draft - guess he mustn't be up to it!

I've only seen him twice and both times he was great.
Weaver's right, we have others who already fill his role. Can't help thinking he might be worth a punt rookie listing because he seems to have a bit of magic about him and uncanny goal sense.

He's probably too small for AFL level, that's why he wasn't drafted
While he has the talent, he's of a size that has a big ? over his head, which is why teams will only take the risk as a rookie on low $ and 1 year contract

So he is a Stephen Kenna type?

Pretty much. Small aboriginal forward. Played 2003 at Calder and was superb, made the Vic Metro squad. Super quick and can kick goals but is one sided, very light and very small.

Actually is part of a football / education scheme being run in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne for Aboriginal kids. The scheme is partly run by ex-Tiger Phil Egan.

In 2004 he missed most of the year injured, came back basically the week before the championships and was very very underdone. Didn't really get back into any sort of fitness or form.

That goalsneak position is basically a specialist position, almost like a cricket wicketkeeper. Most clubs have 1-2 guys in that position and no more. Most years there are only 2 or 3 clubs looking for a guy like that. It means that most of them Milne, Davey, Kenna, Phil Matera, Moorcroft etc have to play some State League footy and wait for a vacancy to open up. It is rare to recruit one straight out of junior footy.

Eddie Betts has shown he can play, BUT being only around 5'6'' tall he may find it very hard in the AFL. He however could play very well in the VFL.
