Hi guys, not sure where to find this so thought i would ask the question here. What exactly is the definition of an effective possession? I notice a definition on the AFL website about effective disposal percentage but want to know whether this is a complete definition that basically defines an effective possession: -
The total effective disposals divided by total disposals. Effective disposals are made up of effective long kicks, effective short kicks and effective handballs. An effective long kick is one that is 40 metres to a 50/50 or better for the team. An effective short kick is one that results in a teammate's possession who was the intended target of the kicker. A handball to a teammate that hits the intended target to the team's advantage is recorded as an effective handball.

Champion data make it up on the fly. Case in point is Contested posessions and marks have gone through the roof. Reason: the definition has been changed.

Hi Penski. No such thing as an effective possession, thinking you mean an effective disposal, either kick or handball. I work at Champion so I can tell you exactly what we look for, unlike others around here. The definition that you quoted is pretty much what is used to define an effective disposal. There can be borderline calls though, but consistency in calling a game is something that we work very hard on as it allows for fair comparison between players and teams.

I hope this helps

Is the 50/50 40m+ kick defined at the point of disposal or by the result??

A 45m kick down the line to a 1 on 1 contest, but the team mate gives a free away for hands in the back, so results in a TO....is that effective??
