Eastern Rangers
2015 Worsfold Medalist - Rowen Powell
Revamped Draft Going into the final week before the draft. Hope your happy with your picks.
Priority selection
1. Melbourne - Tom Scully - (18, Dandenong Stingrays, 182cm, 77kg)
- Most complete midfielder in the draft. There has been increased speculation that Trengove could go at this pick, in the end it's a non event as Scully is the best player in this draft by a good margin.
He is not super quick over the first 20m but he has great agility a high cruising speed and a massive tank. I don't expect results straight away but he is fully capable of being a top 5 mid in the comp when he bulks up and gets up to speed senior football.
- Other Options: None
First round
2. Melbourne - Jack Trengrove (18, Sturt, 185cm, 84kg)
- Melbourne has failed to meet with Dustin Martin so that means he is locked in at pick 2. Despardo with classy disposal, big tank and a strong mark can play a variety of roles and has the game style of Ben Cousins.
- Other Options: None
3. Richmond - Dustin Martin - (18, Bendigo Pioneers, 186cm, 88kg)
- Pretty simply Richmond need to build greater depth and Martin has the potential to be a real class act for a decade to come. Super clean ball user, quick and a great kick, seems to have good decision making and could really be the best mid from this draft once he builts up his endurance and loses a touch of weight. The fact he is so much heavier than other draftees is my only question mark.
- Other Options: None
4. Fremantle - Anthony Morabito - (18, Peel Thunder, 191cm, 97kg)
- Very Quick, tall Midfielder he is great below his knees and has good ball control, his disposal is pretty efficent inspite of a horrid kicking action, but it's his decision making that i have issues with. A good leap and but not a strong mark. Plenty of development but he is a risk.
- Other Options: Ben Cunnington and Aaron Black.
5. North Melbourne - Gary Rohan - (18, Geelong Falcons, 188cm, 82kg)
- Hard as nails inside mid who seems to move well, not classy but the type of player you want in the clinches. Wins the ball and is always on the move, allot of development work but he has the basis of a great inside mid.
- Other Options: Ben Cunnington and John Butcher
6. Sydney Swans - Ben Cunnington - (18, Geelong Falcons, 185cm, 84kg)
- Very Dynamic mid and the type of player who Sydney will be attracted towards, kicking action is pretty questionable but he's got the attack on the ball and the drive to make it as an AFL footballer.
- Other Options: John Butcher.
7. West Coast - Lewis Jetta - (20, Swan Districts, 181cm, 69kg)
- Some if not all will consider this pick a reach but he is a pretty safe bet, ability can not be questioned he is super fast can run a sub 2.90 in a 20m sprint, has great flair and agility. Footskills are strong but fall away over 35-40m in spite his ability to pump the ball 55m. Issues he faces are his build and ball winning ability.
- Other Options: Kane Lucas and Aaron Black.
8. Port Adelaide - John Butcher - (18, Gippsland Power, 197cm, 87kg)
- With three first round picks they are in a great postion, Butcher has a great mark and really throws himself into contests. Pretty agile and has reasonable pace as well, decent field kick but has a questionable set shot for goals.
- Other Options: None.
9. Port Adelaide - Kane Lucas (18, East Fremantle, 187cm, 79kg)
- Victorians dont seem to rate Lucas all that highly but he is a safe bet with plenty of scope and great AFL compatibility. Best athlete tested at the DC with the speed, leap, agility and endurance to make him an elite prospect in my eyes.
- Other Options: Jake Melksham and Brad Sheppard.
10. Essendon - Jake Melksham - (18, Calder Cannons, 185cm, 75kg)
- Injured inside midfielder who hits hard on the outside, his kick drive pretty hard, often is found to far forward of the ball for an inside midfielder and is not as clean as others inside in this draft.
- Other Options: Ryan Bastinac
11. Melbourne - Aaron Black (18, Peel Thunder, 192cm, 82kg)
With Butcher going to Port i see Melbourne going after Black, he is something they dont have a very versertile tall who can play a variety of roles while still maintaining forward potency when he goes forward. Has a big tank and can work up the ground and offers something very different to Jack Watts and they could make an elite grouping.
- Other Options: Luke Ball and Daniel Talia
12. Carlton - Ben Griffiths - (18, Eastern Ranges, 199cm, 98kg)
With the pickup of McLean and loss of Fev they should be looking toward another tall and Griffiths in spite of his injury(s) is till that player. Im not however convinced they might use Henderson and Kruz to great effect if Warnock is fit to take the lead ruck role, they also might be looking for a ready made injection to make them into a premiership side
- Other Options: Daniel Talia.
13. Adelaide - Ryan Bastinac (18, Dandenong Stingrays, 184cm, 77kg)
- Will be another excellent pickup for Adelaides midfield and with no need for him to be ready made i feel this selection sits right. It's around market value and he will be ready to step up in a couple of years time with plenty of SANFL/ AFL experience.
- Other Options: Brad Sheppard and Andrew Moore.
14. Sydney Swans - Brad Sheppard - (18, East Fremantle, 186cm, 81kg)
- Best available player and someone who will fit in well at Sydney. Level headed and composed in defense he has a pretty sharp boot and is a quality rebounding defender. I dont see him becoming a mid, but thats just more because he is a bloody good HBF rather than him being a bit weak ball winning department.
- Other Options: Daniel Talia
15. Western Bulldogs - Daniel Talia - (18, Calder Cannons, 194kg, 90kg)
I figure they will go tall, after years of drafting the best available mids they will go after a sure thing KPP/ Utility. He moves well, plays small and could be a brilliant rebounding CHB/ FB.
- Other Options: Nathan Vardy
16. Port Adelaide - Andrew Moore (18, Eastern Ranges, 189cm, 86kg)
- With so many pick inside the first round it's hard to figure on exactly what they need given they added a KPP and Mid already, so ive gone for a classy utility in Moore, he sets up play pretty well, makes few mistakes and has a quality skill set.
- Other Options: Luke Tapscott and Troy Taylor
17. Geelong - Jasper McMillan-Pittard - (18, Geelong Falcons, 186cm, 71kg)
Ive got Geelong going local, come from pretty far back and had some excellent form in the champs/ TAC. Light build so he's not ready made, not that Geelong have an real holes to fill in 2010.
- Other Options: Nathan Vardy and Koby Stevens
Second round
18. Melbourne - Luke Ball
- Just because they have said they will do it. Dont know why they want him, less Scully is too spend a year in the VFL.
- Other Options: None
19. Richmond - Nathan Vardy - (18, Gippsland Power, 198cm, 94kg)
- Figure he is a better prospect than the next tall, can play Ruck/ Forward and fill in a hole in defense. Moves very well and uses the ball well for a big fella, not quite a full size ruck but smart enough to play a part time ruck role along side Vickery.
- Other Options: Carlilse
20. Fremantle - Troy Taylor - (18, NT Thunder, 189cm, 77kg)
- Allot of people have him going to Fremantle, i agree the only real threat is Port at pick 16, he's a super freakish talent. Only issue is his history and i think Fremantle will have no issues at his pick as he probably represents good value.
21. North Melbourne - Koby Stevens (18, Gippsland Power, 187cm, 84kg)
- Slipped a long way, some dont rank him that highly but from what i gather he would be a top ten pick if he did not have OP. Should fit in nicley at North and he justifies the selection of Rohan over Cunnington as i actually think Stevens has got what it takes to be the better player.
- Other Options: Christensen
22. West Coast - Allen Christensen - (18, Geelong Falcons, 175cm, 75kg)
- Going through Westcoast needs they still need a small forward, Jetta is a wingman/ flanker and does not provide that true small forward option. Christensen does, he's small, fast got good skills and has the ability to play forward.
- Other Options: Colyer and Duncun
23. West Coast - Callum Barlett - (18, Geelong Falcons, 179cm, 75kg)
- Westcoast will go best available and take a punt on Barlett. Got a sweet kick and is very fast.
- Other Options: Gysberts and Tapscott
24. Essendon -Jordan Gysberts - (18, Eastern Ranges, 189cm, 82kg)
- Best available player and Essendon will be excited that he fell this far, smart user, breaks the lines and brings his team mates into play. Does not standout but he builds attacks with good and timley ball usage.
25. North Melbourne - Jake Carlisle - (18, Calder Cannons, 197cm, 87kg)
With just a handfull of KPP's left in the draft i think they will go tall, there need for a tall forward is not dire but it does exist. Carlisle has an excellent upward extension and presents well as a true CHF.
26. Essendon - Mathew Panos - (18, Norwood FC, 192cm, 85kg)
More of a tranditional CHF and while he is no Gumby he is allot better than what Neagle currectly offers them.
27. Brisbane Lions - Luke Tapscott - (18, North Adelaide, 180cm, 87kg) Fallen a long way but his high skill folds and style of play/ position will see him fall to the mid to lower 20's. Brisbane will be happy to have another excellent kick in there side.
28. Geelong - Mitch Duncun - (18, East Peth, 188cm, 81kg)
Geelong would have expected Duncan to slide but perhaps not to there second pick. He has the qualities of a great Flanker, not super quick but smart, excellent user by hand and foot with a big tank and a strong mark. Accurate shot on goal. Steal at 28.
29. Adelaide -Travis Colyer - (18, Claremont FC , 175cm, 73kg)
- Adelaide have no real shortages but they have no true forward pocket, Colyer has pace to burn and presents a real longterm midfield option with X factor.
30. Collingwood - Josh Thomas - (18, Broadbeach,178cm, 70kg)
Smart, Fast, Clean inside mid that comes from the Goldcoast and is following Beams to Collingwood, pretty explosive player and a real mid draft gem.
31. Western Bulldogs - Sam Reid (18, Murray Bushrangers, 194cm, 87kg) Ive got the Bulldogs going tall in this draft. They might have been hanging out for another small but ive got them going for this raw KPD.
32. St Kilda - Nathan Fyfe - (18, Claremont FC, 186cm,73kg)
Smart forward who reads the game extremely well, he has a great mark, has good goal sense and a good tank for a young medium forward.
33. Essendon - Jack Fitzpatrick (18, Western Jets, 201cm, 85kg)
- With so many picks through the second round they get all the best left overs, Fitzpatrick has issues but no more than any young ruckmen coming through the system.
