Howard admits doubt on outback ethnic vote

"Woomera: losing votes?"
The Prime Minister has admitted the Government may be losing its grip on the hearts and minds of outback-based, ethnic voters.
Mr Howard told a Liberal Party conference the Coalition could no longer rely on the backing of the influential central Australian refugee community. The South Australian inland seat of Woomera – which has strong ethnic Afghan and Iraqi populations – was as good as a lost cause, he said.
Liberal Party staffers said they could not pinpoint why the Government had lost ground in Woomera, but said internal party polling suggested "moderate to strong" levels of disapproval with the Government's policy of poking all refugees with sticks before locking them in small wooden boxes.
Support for the Coalition among outback-based Afghan-Australians has dipped from a high of 0.04 percent in May to an unprecedented 0.002 percent in latest polls. The two refugees who indicated their support for the Government were understood to be to have been exposed to toxins during their time in detention centres.
In related news, Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock has controversially softened his own stance on refugees seeking asylum. Most foreigners are bad, but not all, he told talkback radio. Callers responded angrily, pointing out that they had met several foreigners, and all of them had looked bad.
