I have a mexican tele and I love it. I think they're pretty expensive new, though, they're a popular make, so there's always some on eBay.

PRS - gorgeous, but depends how much you want to spend!

. Thinking of getting a Fender Tele but are they any good quality wise or overpriced?

I've got a Tele and I love it to bits. It's the one guitar I have that makes me play differently, which makes me like it just that more. Getting a Tele really depends on what sound you're going for. I tend to keep mine in open tunings and use my Strat for almost everything, but there are some times when that unmistakable Tele tone just makes songs that much better. It's a tone you can try to emulate, but at the end of the day nothing beats the real thing.

I've always prefered the larger scale of Fender necks to Gibsons on electric, but prefer the Gibson scale on acoustics.

Who makes the best quality electric guitars these days? Obviously the guitar needs to suit your style of playing. Thinking of getting a Fender Tele but are they any good quality wise or overpriced?

What sort of style are you interested in?

Favourite music is Radiohead, Jeff Buckley (hence the Tele), mellow sort of guitar music. Currently play a Cole Clark acoustic but want to start playing electric and get into more finger picking - really only play with a pick at the moment although it is changing slowly.

Just buy a Cort or a Squier Strat.

I'm heavily biased towards Gibson, but here goes...

Fenders are excellent guitars. I don't like Strats - my hands are too big and I don't like the clean tone - but Telecasters are a nice inbetween the cleanliness of Strats and the distortion of Gibsons, especially Les Pauls. If I were to buy a Fender I'd get a Telecaster.

I play heavy blues/rock stuff, so for me it's Gibsons by a long way. Either Les Pauls, or if you don't like the weight SGs are superb light guitars and very playable. Even an ES335 if you can are lovely too. Depends what you want.

Absolutely nothing wrong with picking a Telecaster though. Except it's not a Gibson. :)

I picked up an SG the other day in the shop - it was incredibly light, could not believe how light it was. Thanks for the advice - I think I will just get the Tele - I like the cleaner tones. As long as my wife doesn't find out it will all be good!

They're also nice jazz guitars. I use an ES-335 , a Hofner 52 model, I rebuilt it with seymour duncan pickup's and a Les Paul Studio as my stage gear. I find they cover all bases. But if you're just playing a certain style, and in some cases, pretty basic stuff, I don't see the point in spending a lot of money on guitars you probably don't need. The Tele is a good choice. I actually don't mind that tone. Albert Collins made an artform out of it. I even went out and ought a tube screamer years ago to emulate his tone.

(I just posted that red face because I like the look of it.)

If you want a slightly more versatile Tele, you can a 4-way harness (instead of the usual 3 way)

It adds an option to have the two pickups in series, like a humbucker, for some fatter tone.

I've got one on my bits-caster, and it ceratinly makes it more versatile, while the classic tele tones are still there

My favourite brand of guitar is Ibanez. I play an Ibanez Jem 7v and I love it and it's probably overpriced I just didn't care. The quality of higher end Ibanez guitars are very good. But with the right set up you can pretty much get any sound you're after. As important as the guitar the amp and any pedals you use are the key to getting the sound you want as they can even make my crappy $300 Charvel guitar sound decent so I invest a lot more time in getting the right sound to suit me from them.
