Has any one noticed the increase in the depressing emo music/bands at the moment, living end, yellow card, afi, HIM, atreyu, and my chemical romance just to name a few is this type of music becoming popular because people are becoming more angry/depressed or is it just a passing shower.

Its a passing shower, pretty sure it all goes in cycles...and I would argue that most of those bands you named are not 'emo'.

That's what I thought tigerfan.. obviously doesnt know too much about music ;)

They aren't even real emo anyway.. emo is an old 'genre', and current 'emo' bands aren't proper emo bands.

But the living end... not a chance in hell mate.

Exactly. Rites of Spring, Fugazi, Minor Threat et al were emo. These new bands (only MCR from that list) are pop-punk with crap lyrics.

Err... you do know that AFI turn 15 this coming July? Idiot. And Emo? you have got to be joking me.. have you ever actually heard an AFI song?

And The Living End? Please... I may not know a whole lot about musical genres, but it's clear that you have no idea whatsoever.

LOL Living End is not emo!

The band that I'm into right now is Panic! At the Disco - I write sins not tragedies.

Very catchy and it's not about depression!

I have a real problem with the term 'EMO' being thrown around in a Musical sense to be honest. Does the fact that one band sings about loss and sadness make them automatically EMO?

I love Radiohead, I love Nick Drake and Elliott Smith, the saddest bastards in the music world - are they emo?

The Living End is a pub band with semi punk leanings (pub punk) - The only thing that would be remotely emo is some of their fan base.

excuse me guys can we please not discuss this infront of me because my sister has turned emo lately and it really hurts me to see her like that. she used to be blonde but now shes covered in fringes and black hair and black make up.

it makes me wanna kill myself, so plz just stop it.

love allan.

remind me again, who's the family emo? ;)

Hahaha.. nice one ;)

And Allan, this new wave of "emo" is a faze. It will die off once people realise that it isn't as cool as they thought it was. Even some of my friends claim that they are emo.. and are 'in love' with bands like My Chemical Romance, The Used, Story of the Year etc... but it only happend once MTV started playing their music. If you tried to play them anything a few years ago, they thought it was trash.
There you go.

You have to deal with it these days about what is "emo." I tried to fight it but I gave up.

The Living End - You must be chemically imbalanced.

Yellowcard - No. I dont know why these guys are refered to as emo all the time. They are barely depressing. Lights and sounds certainly isnt and only a couple off Ocean Avenue could be refered to but just because it's a sad song doesnt make it emo.

AFI - Has an arguement with a couple of songs from sing the sorrow but go listen to Black sails in the sunset and be amazed by what they used to be.

HIM - They are could be mistaken but they dress like metalheads and I have no interest at all in them.

Atreyu - Metal. Emo, huh? Since when was emo so constantly rapid in tempo??

My Chemical romance - pop-punk with a touch of emo.

living end sure as hell aren't emo... Atreyu are more of a metal/harcore band

I actually quite like a bit of emo depending on what kind of mood I'm in... it's good when I want something to chill out too.
I'd classify Jimmy Eat World as emo and maybe Sparta too (who totally rock) but to be honest I'm not all that good at classifying music... I just know what I like and what I don't.

Sorry Vandal, but tis true...Minor Threat were considered emo...out of the DC Hardcore scene.
Minor Threat are hardcore if you ask me. First ive heard of them called emo, maybe you're thinking of Fugazi.

Sorry dude, you're right, I was thinking Fugazi :o

I blame Ian MacKaye and the Codrals I'm on :D

But they kinda led into it...

After Minor Threat broke up in late 1983, the vibrant DC hardcore-punk scene that exploded in 1981 seems to start to run out of steam and fresh ideas within the established DC hardcore sound. The wistful, posthumous Minor Threat 7" "Salad Days" comes out in 1984 and drives the final nail into the coffin of DC hardcore punk. Bands all over the country begin casting about for new things to do : DRI and Bad Brains start going cheeze-metal, New York bands start doing tough-guy mosh, 7Seconds goes jangly U2 alternative, etc. The prevailing change in D.C. is toward melodic rock with punk sensibilities

Ok I admit I am old, but how many sub genres of music are there and how does one stay truly within that genre and not move out

ie Rolling Stones... rock band? Angie is a great ballad , Girl With Faraway Eyes is a great country song

Hell Billy Joel reinvented himself every album

But emo? ffs give me a break. Nick Cave would be considered emo then. Or is it because they dress emo? Black hair hiding eyes white skin black clothes etc etc etc

*grumpy old man rant over*

Sorry, but AFI have turned emo. Atreyu = Emo too. Emo = bad.

Living End have kissed away their punk status and are now pop. Blah Blah.

well this is a hugely debated topic and every single person i know who is into music we all like our own genres but not one person i know can agree when it comes to choosing so called 'emo' and 'non emo' bands. im not even going to touch this one as i have my own opinion and wont be yelled at for having an opinion as i am most of the time. all as i can say is half of the bands people know as emo just frustrates me because its pretty far from the truth. i think people just take a guess and say oh wow look that whole band dresses in black and wears make up....:D:D:D:D:D they must be emo for sure.
so not true...im only a youngen but peoplehave been wearing black and make up for a long time...its not just for this era of try-hards at all.
