I am so bloody sick of people jumping on this 'i hate emo' bandwagon, when clearly none of you have a clue what the whole emo thing is meant to be about. (A broad term for a certain type of emotional music? Think Dashboard Confessional).

For starters, Fall Out Boy is not emo music, so that video is ridiculous in it's self. Secondly, why do "emo" people (what, dark hair and a fringe who listen to a certain genre of music?) cut their wrists? What is this about? Do all people who listen to rap snort coke? Do all people who listen to Britney Spears wear tight jeans? It's just bloody stupid.

Secondly, "Oh i keep seeing emo's everywhere, they are so dumb". What the hell makes someone 'emo'? If you went up to ANY one of these kids who you think are and said "are you emo?", not ONE person would say they are. It's not REAL and certainly not something anybody would be PROUD of.

Thirdly, I hope this suits your little complaining gripe about me, Brittany.

Okay, so we have no idea about something that doesn't exist anyway? And why don't you jump off the 'i hate emo' badwagon yourself...since you think it's not something anyone would own up to in fear of being ridiculed.

Secondly, define 'emotional music'. I'm pretty sure there are more types of emotion than just 'my life sucks, my girlfriend hates me, my parents ignore me because I'm a whinging ungrateful little ********'...as most emo labelled music seems to be these days. No one labels a love song as emo...but love is an emotion isn't it? AFL's national anthem 'Up There Cazaly' is an uplifting song that gets you pumped for a game...but I don't hear anyone calling Mike Brady an emo for writing a song that brings out a happy emotion in people.

The emo stereotype is just the same crowd who used to listen to boy/girl bands when they were kids...and see the idea of cutting their own hair while blindfolded, wearing their little sister's jeans and wearing make up as a way to be part of a 'minority' and be 'different'. If that was the case...then why are bands like Simple Plan, Good Charlotte and Dashboard Confessional near the top of the charts?

Emo exists...it's just the layman's term for Pop Rock...which is just as manufactured as Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls...just with guitars and drums.

</endrant> :D

I think the problem is the whole sterotype of emo that is around these days. Emo music actually used to be quite decent, this is before all the scene kids jumped on it of course. Emo to me is bands like The Get Up Kids, The Promise Ring, Jimmy Eat World, Sunny Day Real Estate etc. who I doubt most of the emo kids these days have even heard of.
These days all the 'cut my wrist' fringe wearing kids aint into that, bands like The Used, Hawthorne Heights, Anberlin, Dashboard Confessional etc. have turned them all into fruits.

In my opinion, this 'new school emo', (I understand where you are coming from Vandal) came about when all the kids who listened to your straight punk, pop punk, melodic punk etc etc, either moved onto metalcore, hardcore or emo, since the rest of that music has pretty much died, in terms of new bands coming through.

I think you'll find that 10 years ago this thread would be a goth or punk kid bashing thread, it's just the terminology has changed, the music has been sanitised/formulated and the clothing....well don't get me started.

People don't like kids who dress differently.

Yeah I agree with that, Ive always been mainly into punk and there is few bands coming through compared to the past. Meanwhile 'emo' is in and there is stacks and stacks of young bands, most of the bands are pretty young guys, meanwhile here I am listening to punk bands some of which have been going for 20+ years. The amount of kids jocking hardcore bands these days is scary, makes you wonder how they get into it from an emo background as musically they are not similar.

Agree, I like all of those bands, also add Saves The Day to the list :thumbsu:

Man, there is nothing like reading through an emo debate thread like this to really make you feel your age. I honestly have no freakin idea what you guys are talking about with all this emo vs punk vs metalcore (WTF is metalcore?!?!) etc etc

Its all rock to me. Be its heavy, hard, pop, melodic, punk or whatever else you wanna call it. It has guitar therefore it is rock, regardless of how much eye liner the band has on or what they're whinging about.

And in terms of what you choose to wear when you listen to this stuff, well this is part of what makes us who we choose to be isnt it? No, i dont particularly get the whole goth look (is that what emo kids look like?), but similarly i've never really understood why hip-hop dudes have their jeans 10 sizes too big and hanging below their arse or why ravers wear fluro coloured clown pants etc etc

But it doesnt offend me to the stage where i want to lash out at their entire sub-culture, which is why i dont quite get all this vitriol against this whole emo thing. Is it really that threatening to you?

Read Vandals post, about how emo used to be top bands like Sunny Day Real Estate etc. now its reserved for whiny lil terds. Thats' the only thing that annoys me.

Haha, metalcore is pretty much what its name says it is. Similar to hardcore due to the use of breakdowns with more of a metal sound. One of the main problems with all the hardcore and emo stuff is the amount of sub-genres. There is stacks. Metalcore is local bands such as Parkway Drive, A Secret Death and overseas bands such as Evergreen Terrace and Unearth.
They all sound alot different to 'old school' hardcore which is influenced by bands such as Gorilla Biscuits, bands such as Bane, Champion, Comeback Kid and locally Miles Away are examples of this. Hope that clears things up....

What is the difference between metal and metalcore then?

I've heard a bit of that Parkway Drive for example. Thats metal if you ask me.

Actually dont worry about it. I'll just end up more bemused by all these silly tags that are over-complicating things. Like i said, its all rock.
