went to see the Powderchair "Crossing the great divide tour" last night which rolled into Cairns last night.

Silverchair went on first and were simply fantastic blew the crowd away, then after at least 20-30 minute break Powderfinger came out and put on a decent set, nothing to great but still ok.

Anyway I probably dont to to as many concerts as i used to, but the thing that stuck out last night was complete lack of an encore and no jamming between the 2 bands together.none ,nothing,zero...

Powderfinger just simply said "Good night Cairns" and walked off.the crowd waited for 5-10 minutes cheering and then the lights simply came on and everyone just went home stunned.

IMO it was a piss poor effort as there were 8000 people there paying 93 clams each, many who would of driven hundreds of km to see a good live act in FNQ

Anyway the point of the post is should we expect an encore,is it still the standard for a band to come out and play another few songs for their fans or am I living in the past?

Interesting. When I saw them at Rod Laver both bands came out and jammed a rollicking rendition of the Who's 'Substitute' as an encore. Was a ripper way to end the night.

What you do expect is value for money. Whatever form that takes. I usually go by the length of the show, rather than by whether they play encores or not. I got 3 hours of entertainment that night, so I was pretty well satisfied. How long did they play for in Cairns?

Kisschasy (who were excellent) came on at 6pm and played for approx 45 after about 20 minutes,Silverchair came on and played for approx a hour and a half then another interlude and the Finger for played for just over a hour.

Concert was over just on 10pm.

So for roughly 3 and a half hours of good entertainment from 2 of Australia's 2 best bands, you could say I got pretty close to value for money for my $93,it was just the total absence of any jammimg together or encore that really stood out.at the pubs afterwoods thats all that evrybody could talk about.

might of just been a off night for them

I am someone who doesn't need the encore as long as a band has played a 'great set' (well balanced and long enough) - I saw Brand New a few months back and they played a 'great set' and just walked off without an encore. Some people around me seemed pissed off, but the set ended so brilliantly it would've destroyed the experience for them to come back for a 'artificial encore'.
