For someone like myself who loves watching other countries besides Aust play cricket against one another too, and who is pretty much over simply watching the Aussies smash team after team, summer after summer out here, the World Cup is a bloody godsend.
What isn't too impressive, however, is the pathetic coverage given to the Cup by the three commercial stations on their respective news broadcasts.
Case in point. Last night saw not one, not two, but three of the most scintillating individual innings in the history of the World Cup. Davison - unbelievable. Lara - astoundingly powerful. Tendulkar - brilliant. Add to that probably the most amazing catch I've ever seen.
But nooooo ... all three nightly news thought that a little more file footage of a despondent Shane Warne, some superficial update on his indecision whether or not to appeal, who's going to replace him (as if Hauritz will actually get a game against anybody other than friggin' Uzbekistan), a couple of useless interviews with the likes of Tim May, James Sutherland etc. none of whom added anything of interest to an otherwise dying story that the media is desperately trying to keep resuscitated .... oh, and then half a dozen super-brief, blink-and-you'll-miss-them token highlights of the Windies/Canada & India/Namibia games.
Obviously there will always be a media bias towards the home country ... We expect that, and I can certainly live with it. But I wish they would stop insulting our intelligence by over-emphasising the importance of the whole Warne thing ... I mean, it's been headlining for a whole goddamn week now.
