Enright fit for Cats
September 6, 2005

GEELONG midfielder Corey Enright has overcome a shoulder injury and is in contention for Friday night's SCG semi-final with Sydney.

Enright hasn't played in the seniors since the Cats' round 19 loss to St Kilda.

But forward Paul Chapman is likely to miss out again with a troublesome hamstring injury.

The Cats trained this morning at Skilled Stadium, with coach Mark Thompson defending Steven King.

He said his skipper had done nothing wrong in Saturday's incident which left Melbourne opponent Jeff White with severe facial injuries.

Thompson said King had every right to try and kick the ball from mid-air, and it was just bad luck that his leg made contact with White's face.

The AFL match review panel deemed yesterday that King had no case to answer.

If fit, Enright is a walk up start. Great player!

We'll be welcomed back with open arms and hopefully he contirbutes.

Regardless, he will offer more than Gardiner. Gardiner should be given the boot!

Yeah fair call, enough with the Gardiner bashing though! Allthough the game was probably allready over, I thought his attack on the footy in the 2nd half on Saturday was as good as any. He certainly didn't disgrace himself out there by any stretch of the imagination.

Geelong's Enright pushing for a return
September 6, 2005 - 2:09PM

Midfielder Corey Enright is pushing hard for a recall to a Geelong side that will be unrecognisable from the one that was trounced by Sydney nine weeks ago.

The Cats are likely to keep changes for Friday night's AFL semi-final against the Swans at the SCG to a minimum, especially with livewire forward Paul Chapman expected to miss again with a hamstring strain.

But having overcome a shoulder injury, Enright has declared himself available for selection for the first time since round 19.

The luckless Enright also missed six matches earlier in the year with a knee injury.

The Cats have lost their last three games at the SCG, including by 54 points in round 15 when they had eight first-choice players on the injured list and another four unavailable with the flu.

But they would still rather play there than at the 80,000-capacity Telstra Stadium, a venue that coach Mark Thompson and his players have never even visited.

Telstra Stadium was unavailable on Friday night because of a scheduling clash with the NRL semi between Wests Tigers and North Queensland.

Geelong thumped Melbourne at the clearances in last weekend's 55-point victory in the elimination final, and Thompson has predicted a similar approach would be required against the bullocking Swans.

"Lots of bodies around, hard tackling, good defensive pressure and strong attack on the ball," he said.

"That's the way we train our boys to play and we're playing a side that plays that style and probably throws more numbers around, so there's going to be more contests.

"But we're going to be ready for that."

The expected attritional nature of the semi-final will be taken into consideration by selectors when they decide whether to bring back the likes of Enright or utility David Johnson, who has recovered from a hamstring injury.

"They are ferocious games, there's every chance it will go right to the wire and you need fit players playing," said Thompson.

The Cats coach has also strongly defended skipper Steven King, saying he had done nothing wrong against Melbourne last weekend when his attempt to kick the football out of mid-air left opposing ruckman Jeff White with severe facial injuries.

"It wasn't reckless, it was totally accidental and I think everyone has admitted that," said Thompson, a day after the match review panel found King had no case to answer.

"Steven could very easily have got injured by Jeff White's head. He's lucky not to break a leg.

"We want him to play really competitive, hard footy on the weekend.

"It's the ball and you've got to go for the ball.

"We should never take away a player's ability or desire to go and attack the ball."

The Cats will fly to Sydney on Thursday and break with tradition by training at an interstate venue to help acclimatise to the SCG.

Can we afford to play someone who hasn't played for 5 weeks? He might be physically fit, but match fit he won't be and to take such a risk in a cut-throat final is something I don't want the club to do.

Chambers for Gardiner is the only change I'd make. We will need two ruckmen to combat Jolly and Ball.

oh man i hope he ends up playing, he would be a great inclusion, however probably cant expect too much from him coming back from his injury, but yes i very much agree enright over gardiner...

Nope, an unfit Enright is better than Charlie Gardiner any day. If we win against Sydney he'll hopefully be close to fully fit for the Saints which is a huge bonus for the team.

the 2's had their mad monday over 2 weeks ago. wtf are you on about scotty?? boris needs to play!!

Boris has been training (sans contact work) for weeks now.

He has the fitness base to get through a game, Obviously hasn't got match fitness but there's only one way to get that at this time of the year.

Every match from now onward is 'cut-throat', so to speak. If the club manages its list per se, then you're suggesting leaving him and DJ out for the season?

With our heavy rotation throught he midfield, I can see Boris being able to play out the game for sure, even being a final...but the fitness staff should know for sure what he's capable of.
I'd like to see him, but not if he can only play 1/2 a game.

Would be great to get him back. They have the off-season to recover if they have to - match-fit or not, he could be very damaging. It'll be great to have the option to rotate players - this was one of our greatest advantages in the first half of the year.

Not a chance. I would take a half fit enright over Gardiner anyday. Actually, Enright could have have 2 fingers missing, half a leg and no arm and i would take him over Garinder.

If Gazza had been out since round 16, would you bring him strait back into the team?

Bottom line, Enright is in our top 5-10 players. If your best players are availble, you play them.

I doubt Essendon would Bring Jimmy Hird back through the 2's. Why should it be any different from one of our top line players? Remember that when the cats were playing their best footy, Corey was in the team, fit and firing.

Corey is fit, play him and hopefully he fires.
