Rejected in favour of two clubs - collingwood and Carlton - which have done virtually nothing to promote women's footy so far.

Either:
a) the club isn't interested or serious about this, but put in a bid anyway to appear "progressive";
b) our bid was poor and/or not professional enough to beat collingwood or Carlton's bids; or,
c) the AFL still believes collingwood and/or Carlton have more valuable brands than Richmond's.

Being "awarded" a provisional licence for 2018 is embarrassing. Frankly, we have been made look like a second-rate franchise. Even Essendon avoided this indignity. Despite being a long-time supporter of women's footy in country Victoria (as a sports reporter) part of me is inclined to hope the club tells the AFL to **** off. Only part of me, I should add.

I don't know which of the three alternatives I mentioned is the least unpalatable. Either way I think this is disgraceful.

Yeah, I'm not too sure what to make of it.... It seems the AFL want us to grow the game (women's game) in the Murray region? Or more in the country at any rate....

I must say I thought at the time our bid came in late (or at least relatively late)....

They want ready-made supporter bases rather than new franchises....apparently

But I don't want to support women's footy, its shit and makes me want to cut my eyes out.

If only I wasn't fat I'd win.

The AFL considers Carlton more likely to form a successful new team than Richmond.
****ing Carlton! That corrupt shit of a club.
That says either the AFL is managed by incompetent dickheads who have no idea.
Or...

They're helping the slower brother of the AFL family, that's why the spoon got one.

I think I am even angrier after reading that.

RFC does not have a voice!

Benny Gale, Hardwick and Cotchin are "nice" guys. But they have no grunt, no balls. We never come out in the media and make a statement on any topic. These guys don't influence decisions, don't make the AFL and others sit up straight and listen to them...

There is a difference between showing interest as opposed to getting on the front foot and getting out there and selling yourself...

until we start showing some grunt on and off the field will be mere pedestrians...

Think of all the successful sides of the past and they have all had leaders grunt on and off the field

The only thing I'm dissapointed in is its quite clear the afl had an agenda all along that they wished to concoct a blockbuster rivalry with coll v Carlton , nothing was going to divert them from this simple minded approach to curry favour from the never ending PR machine of these two clubs .
Never mind what the RFC has done to date in the areas of equality.

In any case , I fairly believe the club needs to focus 110% of its efforts on strengthening our footy department in order to rise above the trough we find ourselves , a woman's license would only detract from those efforts in the short term

Oh, I agree we need to strengthen our footy department.
And I'm at least as interested in a successful VFL side as I am in a successful women's side. Having our recruits and rookies learning how to win at VFL level I suspect is the best way to teach them how to win at AFL level. You know, how Hawthorn, Geelong and Footscray have been doing it.
It's what the women's team decision says about our club that makes me wild.

I was disappointed in that sense only , not with regard to being foremost on my pre season entertainment calendar . I may have gone to a game ,,,maybe . I'll be curious at the standard and the interest it generates ,,good, luck . I'd. Be very surprised if new sides entered immediately in 2018 , unless this is a rip roaring ball tearing success . In any case , suits me to be an. Expansion side and we get the customary concession 10 of first 11 draft picks to get a leg up

Collingwood were almost inevitable given, AFL was never going to pass on that opportunity

Carlton on the other hand is truly surprising, haven't done nearly as much as we have in terms of promotion of women's footy and won't be able to sustain a womens team without AFL funding, which is pretty funny considering the doggies and demons are in the same boat. Can't really see how that decision was made on merit, but i'm not really all that fussed, hopefully we put that money into the footy department.
