Review Farewell PJ

And so ends the illustrious career of Paul Johnson, the wingman in a ruckman's body. He will forever be remembered for his epic chase-down of Justin Sherman (?) on the Members' Wing in 2008.
What other good memories do we have of the big man?

Here's hoping Robbie Campbell is an improvement. And ironically enough, rumor has it that PJ is training with the hawks.

That chase was epic. I was on the other side of the ground in the Southern Stand on the wing, but you could see him closing in quickly from a mile away. I remember thinking, "no way he will catch him...oh....wait....maybe.......BALLLLLLLLLL!!! YEAHHHHHHH!!!!" *spills beer everywhere*

Popped a shoulder out against Sydney going hard at the ball. Impressed me a lot.

Won a Liston medal.

Certainly one of the more skilled big men I've ever seen (although he got carried away a bit at times).

He was playing reasonable football around then but never did recover that form after the injury.

Or am I seeing it through rose coloured glasses now hes gone?

The goal he kicked againist the cats when we got pumped by over 100 points either in 2007 or 2008. It was right on the boundary, the only highlight on that night.

I maintain that he had all the attributes to be a gun player. Very silky kick, very quick and a big body. But the boy lacked the brain for footy. Far too easily forgot that he was a ruckman and would do the most stupid things as a direct result, i.e., handballing the ball to the opposition player and aimlessly kicking it when he got it.

PJ you truly were an enigma. You were my favourite whipping boy and for that I'll miss you.

Completely agree. He used to frustrate the hell out of me because he was very clean with the ball and had great mobility but had no brain, and he never used his size like Jamar does.

Was never AFL standard but I will never forget when he ran down Sherman and that piece of play against Sydney in early 2006 when we got our first win of the year at the SCG.

That's the first thing that came to mind when I saw this thread. It was the 150th anniversary game, 8th August 2008. In the last quarter from memory, so I'm not surprised if few others remember it.

Remember watching the game after work with some West Coast supporting colleagues - painful experience indeed.

The worst PJ memory was the North game in 2007 when we lost be a point. It was Round 9 and we still hadn't won a game yet. IIRC last quarter, we had all the momentum, ball gets delivered into the goal square, clears the pack, lands in PJ's arms, instead of going back for a simple set shot, plays on and subsequently has his kick smothered for a rushed behind. Basically cost us the match.

The goal he kicked in 2009 against his old mob West Coast... on 50 with a slight angle... pretty much icing on the Melbourne victory..... GOAL and didn't he love it!!!!

Sherman run down awesome....

Miss ya big fella!!!!!
