They say Geelong has benefited most from the father son rule. Which players did we get at a steal and which ones have turned out because of developement through the club?
I have been following Geelong for ages and think that this rule is central to the culture of any club. The AFL should not tamper with it.

Since 86 we have had 8 Father/Son selections

They are (as at end 05)

95 Simon Fletcher 0 games
97 Matthew Scarlett 140 games
97 Mark Woolnough 6 games
98 David Clarke 89 games
01 Gary Ablett Jr 79 games
03 Mark Blake 3 games
04 Nathan Ablett 4 games

You would have to say there are only 2 clear successes and 1 with potential.

How many of these would have gone as 1st or 2nd round picks?? 3 or 4 maybe? It not as big anadvantage as some may have us think.

Hell, I didn't realise Clarke played 89 games for us.

You forget how grim things were for us in the late nineties, early 00's.

Didn't he have an older brother that played a couple of games for us ?
Was he not a F/S selection ?

P.S You forgot Tim Callan [about 7 games]

Mark Blake would have been the earliest picked, his year was terrible for rucks. I think Ericksen, who ended up at Sydney and hasn't played a game yet, was the only other ruck picked from the u-18s.

Gary Jnr may have went late first round.

Scarlett is short for a key positon player and was a lightweight in the u-18s. A bit before my time so I don't really know but he fits the characteristics of a player that would drop down the order a bit. Rutten was taken in the rookie draft!

Ah yes, I did say 8 picks!

02 Tim Callan 8 games

Sorry

and yes 89 for Clarke - things were grim

Yes I think you're right about the older brother of Fletcher. I think he played only one game, it was against Brisbane in 1994 at Kardinia Park and it was a loss. Can't remember his name though. However the younger Fletcher did play quite a few games with Carlton, he was a regular for a while. Their dad was the Football Manager for the Cats while Blight was coach.

He isn't that short. Have a close look next time he's standing next to Hall or Gehrig - he's 6 foot 4 no problems. A lot bigger up close than he looks from a distance. Late developer that's all.

Remember seeing footage of a young Matty Scarlett taking a couple of big hangers in the State Carnival on Talking Footy with Brooce many moons ago. He said that he was going to be a SPECIAL father/son pick for the cats. He certainly looked a fair player at the time so I would think that he would've gone much earler than a third round pick.

Don't forget that back in the late 90's blokes that were 192cm were key position players. It's only recently that they have become good size onballers.

Was it Daniel ?
I think he is [or was] coaching a GFL side.
