I wrote this article for my course at Tafe, and my class said it was well-written and so forth, but im looking for some opinions from people who actually know/like cricket.

Anyway, any criticism is much needed so say whatever you think.

This goes to you too Roughie, as i think we're doing similar courses!

Thanks Guys!

The Ashes

This little Urn is what both English County Cricketers, and our own State Cricketers strive to one day hold, even just bathe in its aura. You could say it’s why they play cricket. That little trophy may be small, but what it represents is bigger than any gold-plated cup could ever.
The first Ashes series was held in 1882, and after a terrible first innings performance the Aussie in the team kicked in and we somehow won. That’s how it started, a legend had surfaced, and still today it lives. The rivalry is bigger and better than ever, and under-performance against the old foe is not acceptable. We still hold the trophy today, or at least the replica as the real one is too fragile to be thrown around by a team full of drunken fools after the 5th Test.
While the next Ashes series isn’t until mid-2009 the hype is already building. With the recent retirements of the likes of Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne and Justin Langer, there looks to be some holes where there wasn’t before. Hard times still loom for the Pommies however, because we Aussies love an underdog. Going into the next tour that’s what we will be. Backs against the wall, fighting for victory, in desperate need of hungry youth and performing experience. Sure, Shane ‘The Sheik of Tweak’ Warne will no longer help guide us out of trouble, and Glenn McGrath can’t be relied on anymore to frustrate the opposition into submission, but that’s what makes this game so great. Two new bowlers will have to stand up, or face immediate cut from the team, and once you’re out, it’s so much harder to get back in.
In the 2006-07 Ashes, the Australian team was regarded by many as the best ever. This led to a crushing 5-0 defeat of England and cut them deep, especially as they had done so well to win the year before. That was a remarkable home series for England. Kevin Pietersen and Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff had breakout tours, while only one player stood up for the Aussies, the ever reliable Shane Warne. While he managed to take a remarkable 40 wickets while facing the Pom’s, there was no support. He was the only Aussie in form, and although he is a star, we needed more than one person to show what being Australian meant.
In the Ashes of 2009, the contest will be fierce, lots of runs and wickets will be recorded and the Australian team needs to show they can still win, even without the spin of Warne and the nagging line and length of McGrath. They need to show they can win in the horrendous conditions that will be around. They have to put away the Pommies as fast as possible. The time is now for the State Cricketers, be playing your best cricket now so the selectors get a good eye full of you, there’s a bunch of spots available, maybe even more heading into 2009. The selectors cannot keep pushing the youth out of the way; surely it’s time for the younger brigade to show the world what they can do.

Bring on 2009!!!
